The airport has multiple terminals, a large transport hub, extensive parking options, and a layout that has changed significantly following a £1.3 billion transformation programme. Getting to the wrong terminal, underestimating security times, or not knowing where your pick-up is waiting can all turn what should be a smooth departure into a stressful one.

The New Terminal Layout: What Has Changed

Manchester Airport has just gone through its biggest transformation in its 87-year history. The layout is significantly different from what you might have read in older guides, so this is important to get right before you travel.

Terminal 1 Is Now Closed

Terminal 1 closed for departures on 19 November 2025. If you have an older booking or information that references Terminal 1, it no longer applies. All airlines that previously operated from Terminal 1 have moved to the newly expanded Terminal 2. Parts of the former Terminal 1 building are being repurposed as an extension of Terminal 3.

Terminal 2 Is Now the Main Terminal

Terminal 2 is the result of the £1.3 billion investment and is now the dominant terminal at the airport. Around 75 to 80 percent of all passengers depart from Terminal 2. It features a modern, expanded departure lounge, a state-of-the-art security hall, new dining and retail options, and double air-bridge gates capable of handling the Emirates A380. Major airlines that moved to Terminal 2 include British Airways, Emirates, easyJet (most routes), Jet2, TUI, Air Canada, and Singapore Airlines. British Airways and Emirates both relocated their Manchester operations here in October 2025.

Terminal 3 Is Being Expanded

Terminal 3 is currently being refurbished and expanded using space freed up from the adjacent former Terminal 1 building. Ryanair is the primary airline using Terminal 3. A new 500-seat sports bar called Sporting Chance is among the first new additions set to open in early 2026. Terminal 3 provides all essential facilities including check-in, security, a departure lounge, and arrivals.

Always Check Before You Travel

Given how much changed in late 2025, this is a situation where double-checking your terminal assignment through your booking confirmation or your airline’s app is genuinely important. Do not rely on what you read somewhere weeks ago. Check the night before.

Which Airlines Use Which Terminal?

Here is a current overview for 2026.

Terminal 2: British Airways, Emirates, easyJet (most routes), Jet2, TUI, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, and the majority of other scheduled carriers that previously flew from Terminal 1.

Terminal 3: Ryanair (primary carrier), plus some domestic routes.

If you are unsure, look at your boarding pass or check your airline’s app. The terminal is always stated clearly on your booking confirmation.

Getting to Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport sits around 9 miles south of the city centre, easily accessible from the M56 motorway. Transport links are excellent and cover most parts of the North of England and beyond.

By Train

The airport has its own integrated transport hub called The Station, located between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. This is connected to both terminals via the Skylink, an enclosed elevated walkway with moving travelators.

Trains run to Manchester Piccadilly in around 20 minutes, with services approximately every 10 minutes during the day. Direct services also connect Manchester Airport to Liverpool Lime Street (around 90 minutes), Leeds (around 90 minutes), Edinburgh, Glasgow, and other major cities. Train services now run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which makes it a practical option even for early morning flights or late night arrivals.

Booking train tickets in advance reduces the cost significantly compared to walk-up fares. If you are travelling from Birmingham or the wider Midlands, a direct train to Manchester Airport is often the most straightforward option.

By Tram (Metrolink)

The Metrolink tram runs directly from the airport to Manchester city centre, stopping at key stations including Deansgate, St Peter’s Square, and Manchester Victoria, where you can connect to national rail. Trams run approximately every 12 minutes and the journey to the city centre takes around 35 minutes. It is a good option for passengers staying in the city or travelling from areas served by the Metrolink network.

By Coach

National Express operates coach services to Manchester Airport from cities across the UK, including Birmingham, London, Sheffield, Leeds, and many others. Coaches arrive directly at The Station transport hub, from which the Skylink walkways lead to both terminals. It is a cost-effective option for long-distance travellers who are not using a car.

By Car

Manchester Airport is well-signed from the M56. Take Junction 5 and follow the airport signs from there. The approach roads are clearly marked for each terminal and the various car parks. The drive-in is straightforward if you know which terminal you need. If you are not sure, the main approach road directs you to Terminal 2 first, which handles the majority of passengers.

Drop-off is charged directly outside the terminals. There is a free drop-off area further from the terminal buildings with a 24-hour free shuttle bus running to and from it, which is worth knowing if you are being dropped off by a friend or family member who wants to avoid the terminal charges.

Meet and greet parking allows you to drive directly to the terminal entrance, hand your keys to an approved valet, and have the car waiting for you on return. It costs more but completely removes the shuttle bus and car park navigation from both ends of your trip.

Drop-Off Charges

Manchester Airport charges for drop-off directly outside each terminal. There is no free zone at the terminal buildings themselves. If you want to avoid the charge, the free JetParks drop-off area with its 24-hour shuttle bus is the alternative, though your passenger will arrive at the terminal via the shuttle rather than directly from your car.

Security at Manchester Airport

Security is the main pinch point at any busy airport. Manchester’s new Terminal 2 security hall has been rebuilt as part of the transformation programme with improved scanning technology, but high passenger volumes in peak periods still create queues.

How Long Does Security Take?

On a standard day, most passengers clear security within 15 to 20 minutes. During school holiday peaks, particularly July and August, queues can run to 45 minutes or more on the busiest days. Friday mornings and Sunday evenings consistently generate the highest volumes.

Tips for Getting Through Faster

Have your boarding pass ready on your phone before you join the queue. Place liquids in an accessible part of your bag the night before. Remove your laptop and place it in the tray separately. Take everything out of your pockets before you reach the belt. These small things prevent hold-ups at the lane itself and make a real difference to how quickly you move through.

Recommended Arrival Times

Manchester Airport recommends arriving at least 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 hours before a long-haul departure. During July and August, add 30 minutes to both. On Fridays during school holiday weeks, treat 3 hours as a minimum for any departure, short-haul or otherwise.

What to Expect in the Terminals

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 feels new because it largely is. The departure lounge has been doubled in size and offers a wide range of shops and restaurants, covering everything from pharmacy and newsagents to designer retail and duty-free. Dining options include well-known high street brands alongside airport-specific restaurants and bars. The lounge access options have also expanded, with several premium lounges now available to passengers with access through airline status, credit card membership, or direct purchase.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is smaller and currently mid-way through its expansion. It provides the core facilities you need: check-in, security, a departure lounge with cafes and a bar, and an arrivals hall. The new Sporting Chance sports bar opening in early 2026 is the first visible addition from the expansion investment.

Moving Between Terminals

Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 are connected by the Skylink walkway, which runs through The Station transport hub. Walking between the two terminals takes around 10 to 15 minutes. If you are connecting between flights that require a terminal change, allow at least 20 to 25 minutes including any additional security re-screening.

Arriving at Manchester Airport

If you are landing at Manchester rather than departing, here is what to expect.

UK and Irish passport holders can use the eGates at passport control for automated processing, which is significantly faster than the staffed queues. Most EU passport holders can also use eGates in many circumstances. Non-EU international passengers join the Border Force queue, which can run longer during busy afternoon arrival windows.

Baggage reclaim screens in the arrivals hall show which carousel your flight is assigned to. During peak summer periods, carousel waits can run to 20 or 30 minutes on busy days.

After baggage reclaim, you pass through customs via the green channel (nothing to declare) or red channel (items to declare), and then into the arrivals hall where information points, currency exchange, and the meeting point are located.
