There’s no direct PIA flight from Birmingham in 2026. Pakistan International Airlines returned to the UK in October 2025, but so far it flies only from Manchester and London Heathrow. PIA has said Birmingham is part of a later phase of its UK return, but it hasn’t announced a start date.
That leaves Midlands travellers with two direct PIA options. PIA flies to Islamabad and Lahore from Manchester, and to the same two cities from Heathrow Terminal 4. Alternatively, you can fly from Birmingham Airport with one stop, on airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines or Etihad. This guide compares the options and explains why some booking sites still show “PIA from Birmingham”. It also covers getting to Manchester or Heathrow with family and luggage.

Why there’s no PIA flight from Birmingham
PIA’s UK ban and return
PIA stopped flying to the UK in 2020, when European and UK safety restrictions were placed on Pakistani airlines. In July 2025, the UK removed Pakistan from its Air Safety List, and PIA received approval to resume UK flights later that year.
A phased return
PIA restarted with Manchester in October 2025, then returned to Heathrow on 29 March 2026. When it announced its return, the airline said Birmingham and London would follow Manchester. London has now happened, but Birmingham hasn’t yet. PIA did fly from Birmingham to Islamabad before the ban, which is one reason so many families still look for the route.
Why booking sites still show “PIA from Birmingham”
Some travel agent pages haven’t been updated since PIA last flew from Birmingham before 2020, so they still describe direct flights on set days of the week. Flight search sites can also show PIA itineraries from Birmingham that involve one or more stops, often with a partner airline flying the first leg. Before you book, always check the “stops” and “operated by” details.
Flying PIA from Manchester
Routes and frequency
Manchester was PIA’s first UK airport after the ban was lifted. From July 2026, PIA increased its Islamabad service to four flights a week and resumed a weekly Lahore service. That makes five weekly PIA flights between Manchester and Pakistan.
Getting there from Birmingham
Manchester Airport is roughly 85 miles from Birmingham, mainly via the M6. In normal traffic, the drive usually takes around an hour and a half to two hours. However, the M6 can be slow at peak times, particularly around Stoke and through Cheshire.
Drop-off and parking
Manchester Airport charges for drop-off close to the terminals. Our guide to Manchester Airport drop-off and pick-up charges explains the current options. If you’re weighing up a week’s parking against a transfer, see our guide to Manchester Airport parking vs a chauffeur.
When to leave
Long-haul flights have earlier check-in deadlines than short-haul ones, and trips to Pakistan often involve heavy luggage. Our guide to how early to arrive at Manchester Airport gives realistic timings for international departures.
Flying PIA from Heathrow Terminal 4
Routes and frequency
PIA returned to London Heathrow on 29 March 2026, with several flights a week to Islamabad. The weekly Lahore service followed on 30 March 2026. Both routes use Heathrow Terminal 4 for departures and arrivals.
Getting there from Birmingham
Heathrow is roughly 120 miles from Birmingham, usually via the M42, M40 and M25. In normal traffic, the drive takes around two to two and a half hours, but the M25 near Heathrow is often congested. Allow extra time, especially on Friday afternoons and during school holidays.
Terminal 4 basics
Terminal 4 sits on the southern side of the airport, separate from Terminals 2 and 3. If you’re travelling with relatives who are new to Heathrow, our complete guide to Heathrow Terminal 4 covers check-in, facilities and arrivals.
Manchester vs Heathrow for PIA: which suits you?
| Consider | Manchester | Heathrow Terminal 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Birmingham | Shorter, around 85 miles | Longer, around 120 miles |
| Destinations | Islamabad and Lahore | Islamabad and Lahore |
| Frequency | Five weekly flights in total from July 2026 | Several weekly flights to Islamabad, weekly to Lahore |
| Road risks | M6 congestion | M40 and M25 congestion |
When Manchester makes sense
For most of the Midlands, Manchester is the shorter drive. If a Manchester flight suits your dates, it usually means less time on the road before a long flight.
When Heathrow makes sense
Heathrow may suit you better if its flight days fit your plans, or if you live in the southern part of the region. It’s also worth considering if you’re combining the trip with a visit to family in London.
Checking both before you book
Each airport has flights on different days, so check both timetables before you choose. A slightly longer drive is often worth it if it means flying on the day you need.
One-stop alternatives from Birmingham Airport
Gulf and Turkish airlines
Many travellers from the Midlands fly to Pakistan from Birmingham with one stop. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Turkish Airlines all offer connections from Birmingham through their hubs, and Saudia offers routes via Saudi Arabia.
Pros and cons
Flying from Birmingham means a short trip to the airport, which helps elderly relatives and young children. On the other hand, a connection adds time and another point where things can go wrong. Some Middle East routes have been disrupted in 2026, so check the latest situation before you book. Our Dubai and Doha flight status guide covers the current position for UK travellers.
Luggage on flights to Pakistan
Check your allowance
Trips to Pakistan often involve more luggage than a standard holiday, including gifts for family. Baggage allowances vary between airlines and fare types, so check yours before you pack, and weigh your bags at home.
Space in the car
Several large suitcases won’t fit in a standard saloon alongside passengers. For families, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats up to seven passengers and has much more luggage space. Tell us how many cases you’re bringing when you book.
If your bags don’t arrive
If your luggage is delayed or damaged, report it at the airline’s baggage desk before you leave the arrivals hall. Our guide to lost or delayed baggage compensation explains your rights and the deadlines that apply.
Busy times for flights to Pakistan
School holidays and Eid
Flights between the UK and Pakistan are busiest during the school summer holidays, around Christmas and in the run-up to Eid. PIA flies only a handful of times a week from each airport, so seats on popular dates can sell out early. Book as far ahead as you can, and compare Manchester and Heathrow dates side by side.
Winter weather
In winter, fog can affect flights at both ends of the journey, particularly early in the morning. If your flight is delayed, watch for updates from the airline and let your transfer company know your new arrival time.
Travelling with elderly relatives
Special assistance
Many families travel to Pakistan with parents or grandparents. If someone needs a wheelchair or help getting through the airport, book special assistance through PIA or your airline well before you fly. Manchester and Heathrow both provide assistance, but it has to be arranged in advance.
Making the journey easier
For older passengers, the drive to the airport can be as tiring as the flight. When you book, tell us if anyone needs extra time, a closer drop-off point or space for a wheelchair or walking aid.
Getting to Manchester or Heathrow from the Midlands
Why families choose a chauffeur
A long drive to Manchester or Heathrow before an overnight flight is tiring, and so is the drive home after landing. With a pre-booked chauffeur, nobody has to drive, and your luggage goes straight from your door into the car.
Flight monitoring for your return
On the way home, your chauffeur tracks your actual landing time, so the pickup adjusts if your flight is early or late. With meet-and-greet, your chauffeur waits for you in arrivals.
