Emirates Flights From Birmingham Airport: Check-In, Lounge and Transfer Guide

Emirates flies from Birmingham to Dubai, and it says it operates 14 flights a week on the route. That works out at two departures a day. At the time of writing, Emirates listed an afternoon flight on an Airbus A380 and a late-evening flight on a Boeing 777. The outbound journey takes about 7 hours 10 minutes, and the return takes about 7 hours 45 minutes.

This guide covers what happens on the ground, from the moment you open your booking to the moment you reach the terminal. You will find online check-in rules, baggage limits, the Emirates Lounge, drop-off charges, parking and the best ways to reach the airport. It also covers children, assistance, delays and connections through Dubai. The guide focuses on what Emirates and Birmingham Airport say, and it flags the points you should confirm before you leave home. We checked the information in October 2026.

Emirates changes its schedule by season. Your booking shows your exact flight time, so treat any time in a guide as a starting point.

Your departure day, step by step

Every deadline on an Emirates flight counts back from your scheduled departure time. This table puts the main ones in order.

WhenWhat happens
48 hours beforeOnline check-in opens
About 3 hours beforeEmirates’ general advice for arriving at the airport, and up to 4 hours at some airports
90 minutes beforeOnline check-in closes for passengers with an e-ticket
60 minutes beforeEconomy and Premium Economy passengers should reach the gate
45 minutes beforeFirst and Business Class passengers should reach the gate

These figures come from Emirates’ own guidance. Your ticket shows the recommended airport arrival time for your flight, and that time overrides any general advice.

Check in online first

Most passengers can skip the desk queue by checking in online. Emirates opens online check-in 48 hours before departure. It closes 90 minutes before departure for passengers with an e-ticket.

You need the surname of every passenger and your booking reference. Enter both on the online check-in page, select the passengers and add any Advance Passenger Information the destination needs. You can change your seat and add a Skywards number at the same stage.

Three rules catch people out.

  • Online check-in does not work if the first flight on your booking is operated by another airline under a codeshare. Check in with that airline instead.
  • Passengers travelling with an infant need a printed boarding pass. The same applies if you have an onward flight with another airline.
  • Mobile boarding passes only work at the airports Emirates lists, so print a copy if you are unsure.

Online check-in saves time, but it does not remove the need to drop your bags. If you have a suitcase for the hold, you still visit the airport desk. Keep your passport and booking reference in your hand luggage, because staff may ask for both.

Checking in at Birmingham Airport

Birmingham has one main terminal building. Departure screens show the check-in desks for your flight, so look for Emirates and your flight number when you walk in.

Emirates does not publish desk opening and closing times on the pages we reviewed. It tells passengers to check their ticket for the recommended arrival time. Its general advice is to arrive about three hours before departure, and up to four hours at some airports. Our guide on how early to arrive at Birmingham Airport explains how security and queues affect that.

Emirates also sets a deadline for the gate. It asks Economy and Premium Economy passengers to reach the gate 60 minutes before departure. First and Business Class passengers have until 45 minutes before. Gates can close earlier than people expect, so aim to arrive before those limits.

A long-haul flight carries more luggage and more paperwork than a short holiday flight. Queues at the desk also grow when two flights from the same airline leave within a few hours of each other. Arriving with time in hand costs you nothing, and it protects you from a missed flight.

Security and getting airside

After you drop your bags, you pass through security. The airport requires liquids in containers of 100 ml or less, packed in one clear resealable bag. Laptops and tablets go in a separate tray, so keep them where you can reach them.

Birmingham Airport also sells Express Lane security tickets. The airport updates its rules and guidance for these, so check its website for current prices and conditions before you buy.

Baggage: what Emirates allows

Emirates uses a weight system on UK flights to Dubai. You get a total weight across all your checked bags, not a set number of pieces.

Cabin or fareChecked baggage allowance
Economy Special20 kg
Economy Saver25 kg
Economy Flex30 kg
Economy Flex Plus35 kg
Premium Economy35 kg
Business Class40 kg
First Class50 kg

Each bag can weigh up to 32 kg. Its length, width and height together must not exceed 203 cm. Items larger than that cannot go in the hold as normal baggage. Skywards Silver, Gold and Platinum members may qualify for extra allowance, and your booking shows the exact amount.

Cabin bags follow different limits by cabin.

  • Economy: one bag up to 7 kg and 55 x 38 x 22 cm.
  • Premium Economy: one bag up to 10 kg and the same size.
  • Business and First: one 7 kg bag, plus one 7 kg briefcase or garment bag.

Bags must fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead locker. Emirates does not allow them behind your legs, in the aisle or in front of emergency exits.

Liquids must stay in containers of 100 ml or less. They must fit inside one clear, resealable bag of up to one litre. Baby milk, baby food and medicines are exempt, but you may need to show proof.

Weigh your bags at home. Emirates sells extra baggage allowance online at a discount, so decide before you reach the airport. The airline also lists special allowances for items such as sports equipment, musical instruments and mobility aids, so check its baggage pages if you travel with one.

Power banks on Emirates flights

Emirates changed its power bank rules on 1 October 2025, and many passengers still do not know. The airline now bans the use of any power bank on board.

You may still carry one power bank, as long as its rating is under 100 Wh. Keep it in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead locker. Power banks cannot go in checked bags. You cannot charge a device from a power bank in the cabin, and you cannot charge the power bank from the aircraft’s power supply. Have the capacity rating ready to show if staff ask for it.

Charge your phone and tablet at the airport or in the lounge before boarding. On a seven-hour flight, a full battery matters more than a spare one.

The Emirates Lounge at Birmingham

Birmingham Airport lists the Emirates Lounge along the International Pier, after security. The airport shows these opening hours: 09:30 to 13:00 and 16:50 to 20:20. One third-party lounge listing shows slightly different times, so check before you plan around them.

The late-evening flight leaves after the lounge’s listed closing time. If you fly that service, ask Emirates whether the lounge stays open for your departure.

The airport page lists fresh food and drinks, full bar service, showers, free Wi-Fi, large screens and business centres.

Access depends on your ticket. The airport says the lounge serves Emirates First and Business Class passengers and Skywards Gold members. A third-party listing adds that First Class passengers may bring one guest, that Business Class passengers cannot, and that Economy passengers can pay to enter. The airport page does not confirm pay-in access, so ask Emirates before you count on it.

Birmingham also has other lounges for passengers without an Emirates premium ticket. Our Birmingham Airport lounges guide compares them.

Shops, food and facilities before you fly

The airport groups its food and drink venues into those before security and those after it. Eat before security if you want a proper sit-down meal with your family, and use the venues after security once you have cleared the checks. World Duty Free sells beauty products, spirits, fragrance and tobacco inside the terminal, and the airport also lists a travel money service for foreign currency.

Check the opening hours of any venue you want to use, because they vary through the day. A late-evening Emirates departure may leave fewer venues open when you arrive.

A free chauffeur for Business Class passengers

The airport’s Emirates Lounge page mentions a complimentary chauffeur-drive for Business Class passengers within 70 miles of the airport. Emirates calls this service Chauffeur-drive.

You must arrange pick-up at least 10 hours before your flight. Add it when you book or later through Manage Your Booking. Each adult gets one car, and the driver waits a maximum of 15 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time. Business Class passengers travel in a BMW 5 Series Touring, subject to availability.

Distance matters. Emirates shows the limit on a map, so enter your address before you rely on the perk. Going beyond the free distance costs extra, and you pay the chauffeur partner directly before the journey starts. Sharing a car lets you travel up to 50% further at no extra charge.

Our guide to airlines offering a complimentary chauffeur service explains who qualifies and what the exclusions are.

Travelling with children or infants

Families have a few extra rules to check before the day.

Emirates lets you bring one carry-cot or one fully collapsible stroller into the cabin for an infant, if there is room. If there is no space, the airline checks it in the hold. Baby milk and baby food are exempt from the liquid limit, but you should carry proof of what they are. An infant on your booking means you need a printed boarding pass, so do not rely on a phone screen.

The Emirates Chauffeur-drive perk applies to adults. Travellers aged 12 to 17 must have a parent or guardian with them. A larger vehicle, or a child or infant car seat, costs extra under that service.

Check the entry requirements for your destination for every child on the booking, including passport validity and any extra documents. GOV.UK publishes travel advice for each country, and it changes more often than guides do.

If you book a private transfer, tell us the ages of your children when you reserve. We can then confirm suitable seats for the journey.

Passengers who need assistance

Tell Emirates about any assistance need as early as you can, ideally when you book. Tell Birmingham Airport as well, because the airport arranges help on its side of the journey.

Our guide on Birmingham Airport special assistance explains what to arrange before you travel. If you need a vehicle with step-free access, say so when you book your transfer.

Getting to the airport

You have four main options, and each suits a different traveller.

By train. Birmingham International station sits next to the airport. A free Air-Rail Link monorail connects the station to the terminal and operates daily from 03:30 to 00:30. It leaves from the first floor of the station and arrives on the first floor of the airport. Take the lift to the ground floor for check-in.

Trains from Birmingham New Street take about 10 minutes. From London Euston, the journey takes about 70 minutes on Avanti West Coast. Several operators serve the station, including CrossCountry and West Midlands Railway.

By taxi or private hire. The airport lists approved providers for black cabs and private-hire cars, and says these services are available around the clock. Book ahead if you have an early flight.

By car. The airport warns about major HS2 motorway works across the West Midlands in 2026. Check your route before you leave, and add time for delays.

By chauffeur. A pre-booked driver collects you at your door and takes you to the terminal. We explain this in the chauffeur section below.

Drop-off and pick-up charges

Birmingham Airport has two drop-off options, and both are barrier-free. The airport raised both tariffs by £1 from 6 August 2026.

Premium Set Down sits right outside the terminal. The first 15 minutes cost £8. Charges then rise through time bands: £13 for 15 to 20 minutes, £19 for 20 to 25 minutes and £25 for 25 to 30 minutes.

The Drop Off car park gives you up to 10 minutes free. Stay 10 to 15 minutes and you pay £7. After that, 15 to 20 minutes costs £8, 20 to 25 minutes costs £14 and 25 to 30 minutes costs £20. A covered walkway leads to the terminal.

You can pay at the on-site machines, pay online through Post Pay within 24 hours, or use an AutoPay account. The airport suggests Car Park 1 for longer pick-ups. That car park sits about one minute’s walk from the terminal.

With heavy long-haul luggage, ten free minutes can disappear quickly. Plan how you will unload, say goodbye and leave before you arrive at the kerb. For the full picture, see our guide to Birmingham Airport drop-off charges.

Parking for longer trips

If you drive yourself, pre-booking guarantees a space and offers free cancellation on most car parks.

  • Car Parks 1, 2 and 3: undercover multi-storey, about one minute’s walk from the terminal.
  • Car Park 4: a surface car park, about three to five minutes’ walk.
  • Car Park 5: a surface car park with a free bus every 15 minutes.
  • Car Park 7: the best-value on-site option when pre-booked, with a free regular bus transfer.
  • Valet parking: you hand your keys over near the terminal, and the car stays in a secured on-site car park.

Pre-booked stays of 14 days or more in Car Parks 1, 2 and 3 can save up to 70% against the standard tariff, subject to availability. The airport’s pages did not give standard prices, so check the booking site for current figures. Our comparison of parking and a chauffeur at Birmingham Airport helps you weigh the cost.

A late-evening Emirates departure often means a late-night return from the car park too. Remember that a bus transfer adds time at both ends if you choose one of the outer car parks.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled

Delays happen on any airline, and a long-haul flight leaves less room for them.

Start with Emirates. Check your booking, the airline’s app or the departure screens for updates, and follow the airline’s instructions on rebooking. If you booked a chauffeur, tell the driver straight away so they can move the pick-up time.

UK261 rules apply to flights that leave UK airports, whichever airline operates them. Whether you can claim compensation depends on the length of the delay and its cause, so read our guide to UK261 flight compensation rules before you decide.

A chauffeur you booked for the return leg should track your flight and wait for the new landing time.

Connecting through Dubai

Many passengers fly Emirates from Birmingham to continue beyond Dubai. A few checks make the connection smoother.

On a single Emirates booking, the airline normally checks your bags through to your final stop. Ask at the desk to confirm it, and look at the bag tag to see the destination printed on it. If you booked separate tickets with different airlines, you usually collect your bags in Dubai and check them in again.

Carry any visa or entry documents you need for your final destination in your hand luggage. The airline can refuse boarding at Birmingham if your paperwork is incomplete, even if the problem sits at the other end of the trip. GOV.UK travel advice for your destination lists what you need.

Arriving back from Dubai

Emirates lists return flights that land in Birmingham at midday and in the evening. After landing, you pass through passport control, collect your bags and walk into the arrivals hall.

Immigration times vary with the time of day and the number of eGates open. Allow a buffer if someone is collecting you.

After a long flight, most people want a quick exit. A pre-booked driver waiting in the arrivals hall removes the search for a pick-up point and the queue for a taxi.

If your bag is delayed or damaged

Report a missing or damaged bag to the airline before you leave the baggage hall, because the airline’s claim process usually starts there. Keep your boarding pass and bag tag, and ask for a written reference number. Take photos of any damage straight away.

Mistakes that cost passengers time

Most problems on an Emirates departure come from a short list of avoidable errors.

Some passengers trust a lounge’s listed hours and then find it closed before a late flight. Others pack a power bank in the hold, where Emirates does not allow it. Bags over the weight limit lead to desk charges, when online extra allowance costs less. A codeshare booking can also block Emirates online check-in, which surprises people at the last minute.

Some drivers arrive at the kerb with no plan for the drop-off charge and leave in a hurry. Others forget to check the road, then meet HS2 delays on the motorway. A few minutes of checking at home removes most of these problems.

Your chauffeur from home to Birmingham Airport

National Executive Transfers is based at Birmingham Airport and has served passengers since 2015. We know the airport, the drop-off areas and the arrivals hall.

For an Emirates departure, your driver collects you from your home or office at a time that suits your check-in plan. You skip the parking and the drop-off charge. Your driver helps with luggage and takes you to the terminal, which suits long-haul passengers with heavy bags.

The service works well for early and late flights. A late-evening departure means you travel home at night after a long trip, and a driver removes the walk to a car park.

On your return, your driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pick-up time if it lands early or late. They wait in the arrivals hall with a name board and take you straight to the car. Our meet and greet chauffeur service at Birmingham Airport explains how it works.

A private transfer also helps if your home sits outside the 70-mile chauffeur-drive area. It works for passengers on Economy fares, who do not receive the airline perk, and for groups or families who need more space. We cover addresses across the West Midlands and beyond,.

Getting to the terminal deserves the same planning. A drop-off tariff, a car park bus and HS2 roadworks each add time or cost to a long-haul start. With a pre-booked chauffeur from National Executive Transfers, you leave your front door on your own schedule and reach the terminal without hunting for a car park. Check the final details with Emirates and Birmingham Airport before you travel.
