Yes, you can bring Zamzam water on a plane to the UK, but only in your checked baggage and only in the right container. Most airlines flying from Saudi Arabia accept one factory-sealed 5-litre container per passenger, checked in as a separate item rather than packed inside your suitcase. You can’t carry it in your hand luggage because of liquid limits.
Beyond that, the details vary by airline. Some carry the 5-litre container free on top of your baggage allowance, while others count it within your allowance. The rules can even change depending on which Saudi airport you fly from. This guide explains the general rules and compares Saudia, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines. It also covers what happens when you land in the UK.
Zamzam water rules at a glance
| Airline | Zamzam allowance | Free on top of your bags? |
|---|---|---|
| Saudia | One sealed 5-litre container, checked in | Free from Madinah; counted within your allowance from other Saudi airports |
| Emirates | One sealed 5-litre container, checked in | Free for Hajj and Umrah passengers whose itinerary includes Jeddah or Madinah; otherwise within your allowance |
| Qatar Airways | One sealed container of up to 5 litres, checked in | Check with the airline for your route |
| Turkish Airlines | No published Zamzam rule | Ask the airline before you buy |
| Etihad | One sealed 5-litre container, checked in | Free on top of your allowance |
| PIA | One 5-litre container listed in its free baggage allowance | Check your ticket’s allowance |
Airlines update these rules regularly, and they can differ by route, visa type and departure airport. Always confirm the current rule with your airline before you travel.
Can you bring Zamzam water on a plane to the UK?
Checked baggage only
Zamzam water has to travel as checked baggage. A 5-litre container is far over the 100ml limit for liquids in hand luggage that applies at most airports, so it can’t go into the cabin. Airline policies also rule out carrying Zamzam water in the cabin.
One container per passenger
Most airlines allow one container of up to 5 litres per passenger. Larger containers, or several smaller bottles, are usually refused at check-in.
Not inside your suitcase
Most Saudi airports and airlines don’t allow Zamzam water to be packed inside your suitcase. Instead, you check in the sealed container as its own item. Saudia’s rules, for example, state that Zamzam bottles aren’t permitted inside checked baggage.
What kind of container you need
Factory-sealed 5-litre containers
Airlines accept Zamzam water only in official, factory-sealed 5-litre containers, which usually come in a protective plastic wrap inside a sturdy box. Bottles you’ve filled at home or topped up yourself are normally refused.
Where to buy them
The official containers are sold at Saudi airports and through approved suppliers in Makkah and Madinah. If you buy one before you reach the airport, make sure it’s the official sealed type, as other containers may be refused at check-in.
Why the rules are so strict
The packaging stops the container leaking during handling, so the water can’t damage other passengers’ luggage. Strict rules also help airports cope with the large number of pilgrims leaving Saudi Arabia, especially after Hajj and during Ramadan.
Airline-by-airline Zamzam rules
Saudia
Saudia accepts one Zamzam container of up to 5 litres per passenger as checked baggage. From Madinah, the airline carries one carton free, provided it comes from the approved factory. From other Saudi airports, the container counts within your free checked allowance, so you may have to pay extra if you’re already at your limit.
Emirates
Emirates allows up to 5 litres of Zamzam water as part of your checked baggage. If you’re a Hajj or Umrah passenger and your itinerary includes Jeddah or Madinah, the 5 litres can travel in addition to your free allowance. On other itineraries, the container counts within your allowance.
Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways allows one bottle of up to 5 litres of Zamzam water, according to its April 2026 handling notice. The airline doesn’t allow Zamzam water in the cabin, so it must be checked in. Whether it travels free on top of your allowance depends on your route, so confirm with Qatar Airways before you fly.
Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines doesn’t publish a specific Zamzam rule on its baggage pages. Many passengers do fly with a 5-litre container on Turkish Airlines, but the airline hasn’t set out its position in writing. Ask Turkish Airlines directly before you buy your Zamzam water, so you know whether it will be accepted and whether you’ll be charged.
Etihad and PIA
Etihad allows one 5-litre package of Zamzam water free on top of your checked baggage allowance. PIA lists 5 litres of Zamzam water in its free baggage allowance. If you’re flying PIA from the UK, our guide to PIA flights from Birmingham explains where the airline currently flies from.
Connecting flights and Zamzam water
Through-checked containers
If your journey back to the UK includes a connection, for example via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, your Zamzam container is usually checked through to your final destination as a separate item. You don’t normally need to collect it and check it in again during your stopover.
Whose rules apply
When your journey involves more than one airline, each airline’s rules can apply to its own flight. If you’re changing airlines along the way, check the Zamzam policy for each one, not just the first.
Gulf connections in 2026
Some Middle East routes have been disrupted in 2026. If your return journey connects through Dubai or Doha, our Dubai and Doha flight status guide covers the current position for UK travellers.
Tips for the airport in Saudi Arabia
Allow extra time
Saudi airports often have a separate process for clearing Zamzam containers, and queues can be long after Hajj and during Ramadan. Arrive in good time for your flight home, so you’re not rushing at check-in with your container.
Children and infants
Each passenger with their own ticket usually has their own Zamzam allowance. Infants travelling on a parent’s lap often have a reduced baggage allowance, so check whether an infant ticket includes a Zamzam container before you buy one.
Keep your receipt
Keep the receipt for your Zamzam container with your travel documents. If check-in staff ask where it came from, the receipt shows you bought it from an official outlet.
Arriving in the UK with Zamzam water
Collecting your container
At UK airports, your Zamzam container may come out on the main baggage carousel or in the oversized baggage area. Check both before you report it missing.
UK customs
Bringing Zamzam water into the UK for personal use isn’t generally restricted. You can carry it through the customs channel with the rest of your luggage.
If your container is missing or damaged
If your Zamzam container doesn’t arrive, or arrives damaged, report it at the airline’s baggage desk before you leave the arrivals hall, and keep your reference number. Our guide to lost or delayed baggage compensation explains your rights and the deadlines that apply.
Hand luggage rules on the way out
Liquids in your cabin bag
On the outbound journey from the UK, your hand luggage still has to follow UK liquid rules. Our guide to UK liquids rules explains the limits at different UK airports. For bag sizes and weights, see our guide to UK hand luggage rules.
Packing for the return
Leave room in your baggage allowance for the journey home, especially if your airline counts Zamzam water within your allowance. Gifts, dates and prayer items can quickly push your suitcases over the weight limit.
Getting home from the airport with your Zamzam water
Space for luggage and containers
After Umrah or Hajj, you may be coming home with suitcases, hand luggage and a Zamzam container for each person. For a family, that can be more than a standard car can carry alongside passengers. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats up to seven passengers and has room for luggage and Zamzam containers.
Flight monitoring and meet-and-greet
Flights home from Saudi Arabia can be delayed, particularly after Hajj or at the end of Ramadan. With flight monitoring, your chauffeur tracks your actual landing time, so the pickup adjusts if your flight is early or late. With meet and greet at Birmingham Airport, your chauffeur waits for you in arrivals while you collect your bags.
