The Luton Airport drop-off charge in 2026 is £9 for up to 12 minutes. After that, you pay £1 for every extra minute. You can stay for 30 minutes at most, and you can never leave your car unattended.
You can avoid the fee. The Long Stay car park is free for up to two hours, and a shuttle bus takes your passenger to the terminal. You trade money for time.
Plenty of websites still quote £7 for 10 minutes. That was the old price. The airport’s own pages now show £9 for 12 minutes, and this guide uses those figures. We checked them on 2 November 2026. Airport charges change, so look at the official drop-off page again before a trip.

What you pay in the drop-off zone
The airport calls it the Drop Off and Pick Up Zone. It sits close to the terminal, and it has no barriers. Cameras read your number plate when you enter and when you leave. You pay afterwards.
| Time in the zone | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Up to 12 minutes | £9 |
| 15 minutes | £12 |
| 20 minutes | £17 |
| 30 minutes (the limit) | £27 |
The 15, 20 and 30 minute figures come from adding £1 for each minute after the first 12. The airport publishes the starting charge and the per-minute rate, not these totals.
Most quick drop-offs finish well under 12 minutes. Pull in, unload, say goodbye, and go. A long hug, a search for a trolley or a queue at the exit can push you past the first 12 minutes without you noticing.
The zone takes cars and minibuses. The airport’s pages disagree on the largest minibus size, so check the seat limit on the official page if you drive one.
How to find the zone
Enter postcode LU2 9QT. Then watch the road signs, because the airport warns that a sat nav may send you the wrong way. Before the roundabout that leads to the tunnel, ignore the sat nav and follow the Drop Off / Pick Up Zone signs.
The zone has two entrances. Use whichever one has the shorter queue.
How to pay, and when
Payment is online only. The airport does not accept cash at the zone.
- Drive in and out of the zone. Cameras record your registration.
- Open the airport’s drop-off payment link, which takes you to the operator, APCOA.
- Enter your registration and pay by card.
- Finish by midnight the next day.
The airport does not mention an AutoPay option for Luton. Some other airports offer one, so do not assume it exists here.
Type your registration with care. One wrong letter means the system cannot match your visit. If you cannot pay online, contact APCOA customer services through the link on the airport’s drop-off page.
Pay on the same day if you can. A phone reminder helps if your journey home is long.
What happens if you stay too long or forget to pay
Stay beyond 30 minutes and you receive a penalty charge of £95. It drops to £55 if you pay within 14 days. The airport says it enforces the zone with mobile CCTV cameras.
The airport does not publish what happens if you miss the midnight deadline but stay within 30 minutes. Do not rely on a forum post or a third-party site for that answer. Contact APCOA if it happens, and keep your payment receipt and flight details.
Never leave your car unattended. The airport bans it at any time, and unattended vehicles can be towed and fined. If you want to walk your passenger to the check-in desk, use one of the other options below.
How to avoid the Luton Airport drop-off charge
The airport promotes one free option: the Long Stay car park.
What you get
- Free parking for up to two hours.
- Postcode LU2 9NW.
- No height restriction.
- A free shuttle bus that operates 24 hours a day, every 20 minutes.
- A ride of about 10 minutes to the terminal.
- Blue Badge spaces near bus stop 7.
How to use it
- Enter postcode LU2 9NW.
- Take a ticket at the entrance.
- Park, and note where you stopped.
- Walk to one of the bus stops spread around the car park.
- Ride the shuttle to the terminal.
- Leave the car park within two hours, using your entry ticket.
Your passenger boards the shuttle back to Long Stay from Bus Bay B, just outside the terminal. Your passenger does not need to return, but you do if you plan to collect the car.
What it costs you in time
The shuttle runs every 20 minutes, so you might wait nearly that long at the stop. Add the 10-minute ride, and the journey from car to terminal door can take 30 minutes or more. That is our estimate from the published timings, not an airport figure.
If you stay over two hours
The on-the-day price for three hours is £7. Pay at a machine before you exit.
A note on Mid Stay
Older guides, and the airport’s own taxi page, mention a free drop-off at the Mid Stay car park. The airport’s current drop-off page names Long Stay only. Follow the current page.
Another option to price up: Terminal Car Park 1
Terminal Car Park 1 is the closest car park to the terminal. The airport describes a four-minute walk over a footbridge. It has a height limit of 2.1m.
The airport’s car park page lists these on-the-day charges, effective from 22 June 2026:
| Time | Price |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 minutes | £15 |
| Up to 60 minutes | £21.50 |
| 1 to 3 hours | £30.50 |
This is a parking tariff, not a drop-off product, so treat it as a comparison. The sums are simple. Stay 18 minutes in the zone and you pay £15, the same as 30 minutes in Terminal Car Park 1. Beyond 18 minutes, the car park costs less. If you need to walk your passenger inside, buy a coffee or help with a pushchair, it may beat the zone.
Check the current tariff and entry rules on the airport’s website before you rely on this.
Which option suits which driver
| Situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quick goodbye, light luggage | Drop Off and Pick Up Zone | Short walk, done in under 12 minutes |
| Family with young children and bags | Drop Off and Pick Up Zone | No bus wait with a pushchair |
| You want to avoid the fee | Long Stay car park | Free for two hours, but slower |
| You need 20 to 30 minutes inside | Terminal Car Park 1 | Can cost less than the zone beyond 18 minutes |
| Passenger has reduced mobility | Terminal Car Park 1 | Official recommendation, see below |
| Collecting someone | Long Stay, or the zone if you need speed | Landing times are hard to predict |
Blue Badge and assisted travel
The main drop-off zone gives no concessions to Blue Badge holders. You pay the same charge as everyone else.
The airport recommends Terminal Car Park 1 for passengers with reduced mobility. Blue Badge holders and people with booked assistance get 30 minutes free there. Longer visits cost:
- 30 to 60 minutes: £7.50
- 1 to 3 hours: £19.50
- 3 to 5 hours: £39
Before you leave, validate your badge or proof of assistance at the Priority Parking reception on Level 2. You cannot pre-book this service. Blue Badge spaces sit on Levels 0 and 1.
Concessionary rates do not apply in the drop-off and pick-up area on the ground floor of Terminal Car Park 2, so avoid it for this purpose.
Help points in the car parks connect you to Wilson James, the airport’s assistance provider. Press the button, and staff meet you at that point and take you to the terminal. They ask what help you need, such as a wheelchair or luggage support.
On arrival, passengers who need help stay seated until the other passengers leave the aircraft. Wilson James then helps them through border control and baggage reclaim, and on to their onward transport, including the pick-up area.
Collecting passengers from Luton Airport
Pick-ups follow the same choices. The paid zone charges the same £9 for 12 minutes, and the same 30-minute limit applies. The free option is the Long Stay car park, with its two free hours.
Flight arrivals rarely match the time on the screen. Passengers wait for bags, pass border control, and walk a long way to reach you. Do not enter the paid zone until your passenger tells you they are ready. Every minute past 12 costs £1.
The Long Stay car park gives you a calmer wait. Park up, wait for their message, then collect them from the terminal shuttle stop and walk back. That costs nothing if you leave within two hours.
Taxis and pre-booked cars
The charge applies to the vehicle, so taxi and private hire passengers meet it too.
The airport’s taxi page says the operator pays the drop-off charge by midnight the next day, and that the charge is usually added to the fare. The same page still quotes older figures of £7 for 10 minutes, so ask the operator what they will charge you. The page also says taxi drivers can drop passengers for free at the Long Stay car park, with two hours to exit.
For arrivals, pre-booked cars wait at the Pick Up Zone or an agreed meeting point. Hackney carriages queue at the rank just beyond Bus Bay A. They use a meter, accept major credit cards, and carry up to seven people.
Ask any operator three things before you book: does the quote include airport access charges, where will the car wait on arrival, and what happens if your flight is late.
Other ways to reach the terminal
You do not have to drive to the door.
Train and DART. Trains stop at Luton Airport Parkway station. From there, the Luton DART takes about four minutes to reach the terminal. It operates around the clock, with a train every four minutes at peak times and every seven minutes in the daytime off-peak. A single adult fare costs £4.90, and children under five travel free. If you buy a train ticket to London Luton Airport from Thameslink, Luton Airport Express or East Midlands Railway, the DART is included. From London St Pancras, the fastest train takes about 32 minutes.
Dropping at the station. Leaving your passenger at Parkway looks easy, but there is a catch. APCOA says access to Station Road for passenger drop-off and pick-up will be very limited from 21 March 2026 to 8 January 2027, while workers install a new footbridge and lifts. The station car park has no free grace period and charges £11.40 for a weekday. Check the station’s current arrangements before you promise anyone a quick drop.
Travelling to Luton from Birmingham
The drive from Birmingham to Luton Airport is about 86 miles and takes around 1 hour 40 minutes, according to our route figures. You take the M6 and then the M1. Traffic on the M1 slows many journeys, so build in extra time for a morning flight.
Trains from Birmingham need a change before you reach Parkway, then the DART. That suits one traveller with a small bag. It suits a family with suitcases less well.
A driver from Birmingham often faces a long drive home after the drop. That makes the paid zone attractive, because the stop takes under 12 minutes and the road is waiting. A driver with time to spare can use Long Stay and pay nothing.
Plan your arrival time too. Our guide on how early to arrive at Luton Airport helps you set a realistic target.
Mistakes to avoid
- Quoting the old £7 price when you plan your budget.
- Entering the zone before your passenger is ready.
- Leaving your car, even for a minute.
- Forgetting to pay by midnight the next day.
- Mistyping your number plate.
- Following the sat nav past the zone signs.
- Assuming a Blue Badge gives a discount in the main zone.
- Assuming a chauffeur or taxi pays nothing.
How a pre-booked transfer fits in
A pre-booked transfer removes the parking question. You agree the pick-up time, the car comes to your door, and the driver takes you straight to Luton. Nobody searches for a space, and you do not leave your car at the airport.
National Executive Transfers (NET) operates from Birmingham Airport and covers journeys to Luton from the Midlands. A fixed-fare transfer suits early starts, long journeys, groups with heavy luggage and anyone returning after a late flight.
Airport access charges depend on the vehicle and the drop-off arrangement. A chauffeur does not automatically avoid them, so we confirm what applies when you book. Trains and your own car remain good choices for many trips. If your journey is long, or you want a driver to handle the airport approach, we can help.
To plan a trip, see our Birmingham to Luton airport transfers and send us your flight time, pick-up address and group size.
Conclusion
The Luton Airport drop-off charge in 2026 is £9 for 12 minutes, and it climbs by £1 each minute up to the 30-minute limit. Pay online by midnight the next day and never leave your car unattended.
If you want to avoid the fee, use the Long Stay car park and allow time for the shuttle bus. If you need longer than about 18 minutes, price up Terminal Car Park 1. If someone needs step-free access, use that car park and claim the Blue Badge concession. For a longer trip from Birmingham, a booked transfer saves you the decision.
