Utilita Arena Birmingham is the city-centre venue. It is not bp pulse LIVE, which sits on the NEC campus several miles away. Our guide to getting to Utilita Arena Birmingham explains the difference and covers the venue year-round.
The two start times matter. We couldn’t find a published running order, so you can’t tell when Ricky himself will walk on. Plan to be in your seat for the earlier time.
Buying tickets safely
The venue says AXS is its official ticketing partner. It warns that tickets bought from unauthorised outlets risk refused entry, or no refund if the event is cancelled or postponed. Check where a listing comes from before you pay.
Why a weeknight changes your plans
Rush hour meets doors
Birmingham’s evening peak runs from about 4pm to 6:30pm on weekdays, according to our Birmingham rush hour guide. Doors open at 6pm, so most people arrive while traffic is still slow. Broad Street is one of the areas that slows down quickly.
As a result, a 20-minute off-peak trip can take 40 to 60 minutes during peak congestion, according to that guide. Add a buffer of at least 30 minutes to your drive, and more if you’re coming along the M6 or M42.
The Christmas market is already open
Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market opens on Thursday 5 November, so it is running on both show nights. From Monday to Thursday it is open from 11am to 9pm, according to the city council. The Big Wheel and ice rink in Centenary Square, a short walk from the arena, are also open.
More people in the centre means busier pavements, fuller restaurants and slower traffic before the show. Eat early or book ahead, and leave extra time if you’re walking through the market area.
Ricky Gervais Birmingham parking: what the venue says
On-site car parks
The venue has North, South and West car parks. The West car park is reserved for pre-booked and hospitality customers. The venue recommends pre-booking your space to guarantee a spot.
All parking payments are cashless, so bring a card or phone. Vehicles over 2m in height should use the North Car Park.
Blue Badge parking
Blue Badge parking is in the South Car Park on Level 11, which leads to accessible Entrance D, and in the North Car Park on Level 9. The North Car Park has no lift, so check the venue’s parking page if you need step-free access.
Premium packages and parking
The venue’s Premium packages include parking and priority entry, depending on the package. If you’ve already bought a ticket, you can upgrade through the ticketing partner. Check the package details to confirm what’s included.
The Clean Air Zone
The arena and its car parks sit inside Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone. Daily charges apply to vehicles that don’t meet the zone’s criteria. Check your vehicle before you drive in, and read our Birmingham Clean Air Zone guide if you’re unsure.
The exit queue
A booked space gets you into the car park. It doesn’t help you leave. Cars exit together after the show, and the roads around the arena fill quickly. Allow extra time, particularly if you have a long drive home on a work night.
Drop-off and pick-up by taxi or chauffeur
What the venue says
The venue’s getting-here page advises booking a taxi in advance and using its taxi pick-up and drop-off points. We couldn’t find those points named on the venue’s own pages. Check your ticket confirmation and the venue’s website nearer the date for the exact locations.
Agree a meeting point
Don’t rely on stopping outside the main entrance. Choose a spot a short walk from the arena, on a road your driver can reach, and send them the location. A point you can both find matters more than being as close as possible.
If the crowd blocks your spot, move to a nearby side street and share your live location. A quick message early is better than a driver circling a closed road.
Timing your drop-off
Aim to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before the show, because bag searches and security take time. The table shows what that means for each possible start time.
| If your show starts | Doors open | Aim to be dropped off |
|---|---|---|
| 7pm | 6pm | 6:00pm to 6:15pm |
| 7:30pm | 6pm | 6:30pm to 6:45pm |
Because sources disagree on the start time, treat 7pm as your planning time. A drop-off at 6:00pm to 6:15pm works for either start and avoids the busiest crowd.
If you’d like a fixed price agreed before you travel, our events chauffeur service explains how event transfers work.
Getting home after the show
Plan before the final joke
Comedy shows have no encore to warn you that the end is close. We couldn’t find a published running order or curfew for this show, so don’t plan around a particular finish time. Decide before you take your seat how you’re getting home.
Pre-arranged pickups
A pre-booked driver removes the search for a car in a crowd. Share your ticket details, agree a meeting point and message your driver as you leave the venue. A pickup window works better than a single minute.
On a Monday or Tuesday night, many people also have work the next morning. That makes a fast, predictable journey home more valuable than usual.
Late trains
Check train times for your journey before the show. Don’t assume your usual last train, because late weekday timetables can differ. Have a back-up plan in case you miss the final service.
Getting there by train, bus or coach
By train
The venue says it is a short walk from Birmingham New Street, Moor Street, Snow Hill and Five Ways stations. It adds that taxis are available at each station. The walk from New Street is generally 15 to 20 minutes, so allow extra time on a busy evening.
By bus and coach
The venue says buses run past the arena frequently. Digbeth Coach Station is about a 30-minute walk away, or a short taxi ride, and the venue recommends the taxi.
Age rules for Ricky Gervais in Birmingham
Live Nation lists the Birmingham shows as 16+. The venue’s general policy is different: under-14s in seated areas must be with an adult aged 18 or over, and 14 and 15-year-olds can only enter a standing floor with an adult. That policy is generic, so the 16+ listing is the safer guide for this show.
If you’re bringing a teenager, check your ticket terms before you travel. Tell your driver about the group, so the drop-off point suits everyone.
Security, bags and lockers
Bag size and searches
Bags must be no bigger than 21cm x 30cm x 19cm, which is the size of an A4 sheet. They can have a maximum of two compartments, and rucksacks are not permitted. The venue searches all bags, so it prefers that you bring none. Outside food and drink aren’t allowed.
Lockers and coats
The venue has keyless lockers on the Level 1 Concourse, near Entrance F once you’re through security. They take A4-sized bags and bulky winter coats, and you book them through the venue’s website. Lockers can’t hold prohibited items, so check the venue’s security page for your event.
In November, a locker may be worth considering. You’ll be outside for part of the evening, and a heavy coat is easier to leave than to carry through a crowd.
Groups and accessibility
For a group, the Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven passengers, and our saloons take fewer. Tell us how many people and bags are travelling, so we choose the right car. A shared car also means everyone arrives and leaves together.
If anyone in your party has mobility needs, tell us when you book. The venue says tickets for accessible areas are sold online for all events, subject to availability. It also says medical equipment in a bag larger than the standard policy should go through an accessible entrance.
A sample weeknight timeline
This is an illustration for a 7pm start, not a timetable.
- 4:30pm: Leave work or home, with extra time for the evening peak.
- 5:30pm: Arrive in the city centre for food or a walk through the market.
- 6:00pm: Doors open. Arrive by taxi, or walk to the arena.
- 6:15pm: Join the security queue, with your bag already within the A4 limit.
- 7:00pm: Take your seat for the earlier start time.
- After the show: Meet your driver at the agreed point, away from the main crowd.
Adjust the times for your journey and your seat. If your ticket shows 7:30pm, you gain half an hour before the show.
