There are no scheduled direct flights from Birmingham to New York at the moment. Birmingham Airport’s own New York page says so. Its list of 155 destinations names no US city other than New York, which it describes as one-stop only. The airport has committed funds to bring a daily New York service back from summer 2027, but we couldn’t find an airline confirmed for it.
For direct flights from Birmingham to New York today, you need to travel to Manchester or a London airport. The alternative is a one-stop trip via Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris or another European hub. This guide compares those options and explains the US entry rules for UK passport holders.

What Birmingham Airport says
No direct flights today
Birmingham Airport’s New York page says there are currently no direct flights. The airport recommends connecting through a European hub such as Dublin, Amsterdam or Paris. Air France, Aer Lingus, KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss are the airlines it names for one-stop trips to New York.
The plan for summer 2027
In February 2026, the airport announced a multi-year financial support package for airlines. It aims to secure daily scheduled flights between New York and Birmingham from summer 2027. Trade reports say the airport wants the route in place for the Invictus Games, which Birmingham hosts in 2027.
The airport says about 485,000 passengers a year from its catchment area fly to New York through other airports. It also reports 1.88 million trips to the US from the wider area in 2024. Those figures come from the airport, and we haven’t verified them independently.
In February, the airport’s chief executive said it was in airline discussions and was reassured that direct US connectivity would return. However, the offer isn’t a confirmed route. No airline has been named, and we couldn’t find a published schedule.
Why the last direct flights ended
Birmingham’s last direct New York flights ended in 2017, according to reports at the time, although some trade sources date the final service to 2018. American Airlines dropped its Birmingham to JFK route first. United then ended its Newark service from October 2017, citing poor financial performance. That history explains why the airport is now offering money to attract a carrier.
Your options for flying to New York
One stop via Dublin
Few European hubs offer what Dublin does. Dublin Airport provides US Preclearance in Terminal 2, so you clear US immigration and customs before you fly. When you land in the US, you arrive as a domestic passenger. Aer Lingus connects Birmingham to Dublin and onward to the US.
Most US flights from Dublin include preclearance, but not all, so check with your airline. Dublin Airport suggests arriving three hours before a long-haul flight. You still need an approved ESTA, because preclearance doesn’t replace it.
One stop via Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt
KLM, Air France and Lufthansa all connect Birmingham to New York through their hubs. You clear US immigration in New York, as you would on a direct flight. Choose a connection time that suits the airport’s size, because missed connections are the main risk.
The airport’s list also includes Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich, which are hubs for Lufthansa and Swiss. Both airlines appear on the airport’s one-stop list for New York.
Direct from Manchester
Manchester has a direct New York service. Virgin Atlantic’s website lists direct flights from Manchester to New York. Schedule trackers show about seven weekly departures to JFK, with a flight time of around 7 hours 25 minutes to 8 hours. Aer Lingus UK ended its own Manchester to New York flights in February 2026, according to reports, so check which airlines currently operate. Schedules change by season.
From Birmingham, our own guide puts Manchester Airport at around 80 to 90 miles, and about one hour 30 to two hours’ drive. Our Manchester Airport chauffeur service page covers the route.
Direct from London
London has the widest choice of direct New York flights, including several airlines from Heathrow. From Birmingham, Heathrow is roughly 120 miles, mostly via the M42 and M40, and takes about one hour 45 minutes to two hours in clear traffic. Our Birmingham to Heathrow chauffeur service covers it door to door.
Gatwick is further, at about 154 miles and roughly three hours according to our Gatwick Airport chauffeur service page.
Via the Gulf
Emirates and Qatar Airways fly from Birmingham to Dubai and Doha, and both connect to New York. That’s a long way round, but it can suit some fares and some onward plans. Our Dubai and Doha flight status guide explains the current position. For a comparison of the airlines, read our Emirates vs Qatar Airways vs Etihad guide.
Which option suits you
| Option | Stops | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly one stop from Birmingham | One | Starting at your local airport | Connection time, and longer total journey |
| Fly from Manchester | None | A direct flight with one airline | Drive of 1.5 to 2 hours first |
| Fly from Heathrow | None | The most flight choices | Longer drive and early start |
| Via the Gulf | One | Certain fares and onward routes | Very long total journey |
Starting at your local airport
A one-stop flight from Birmingham keeps the journey short at the UK end. You park or get dropped locally, and you skip the drive to Manchester or London. The trade-off is a connection and a longer total travel time. For many travellers, that’s still the simplest choice.
Flying direct
A direct flight removes the connection risk and cuts total travel time. The cost is the extra journey to Manchester or London. That’s a good trade if you value time in the air, or if you’re travelling with children or heavy luggage.
Choosing the best option for your trip
Families with children
A direct flight avoids a connection with tired children, so Manchester or Heathrow may suit you. The cost is a long drive beforehand. A pre-booked car lets everyone travel together with the luggage. If you’d rather start locally, choose a connection time that doesn’t leave you rushing between terminals.
Business travellers
Time and certainty matter most on a business trip. A direct flight cuts the risk of a missed connection, and a single ticket for the whole journey protects you if the first flight runs late. Check the airline’s rules on connections and baggage before you book.
First-time visitors to the USA
First-timers should factor in extra time for immigration queues, which can be long at busy periods. Preclearance in Dublin avoids that on arrival. Whichever route you choose, carry your ESTA confirmation details and your return or onward plans.
Choosing a New York airport
Birmingham Airport’s page describes the three airports. JFK is the main international hub with the most flight options. LaGuardia is closest to Manhattan and suits domestic routes. Newark in New Jersey often has competitive fares. Your choice depends on where you’re staying and what you’re paying.
Entry rules for the USA
ESTA for UK citizens
British citizens travelling to the US under the Visa Waiver Programme need an approved ESTA. Apply on the official US Customs and Border Protection site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov. The fee rose to about US$40 in September 2025, and a law firm summary of CBP changes puts it at $40.27 from January 2026. Check the site for today’s price.
An approved ESTA is valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows stays of up to 90 days. However, it doesn’t guarantee entry, because a border officer decides on arrival. Dublin Airport warns that you can’t board without an approved ESTA.
Application changes to expect
US Customs and Border Protection has proposed making social media details from the past five years a mandatory part of the ESTA application. It has also proposed a selfie and a move to a mobile-app-only process. Sources differ on how much of this is in force, so expect extra questions and allow more time. Check the official ESTA site or app for the current requirements when you apply.
Beware of unofficial sites
Some websites charge much more than the official fee. Use the official US government site only. Apply well before you travel, because processing can take time, and guides recommend allowing at least 72 hours.
Passport checks
Your passport needs to be a biometric one with a chip. Check its expiry date before you apply, because an ESTA ends when your passport does.

How to check whether a direct route has launched
The airport updates its New York page and its destinations list when a route starts. Airlines usually announce new routes months ahead, so a route for summer 2027 would normally appear in booking systems first. Search using “BHX” and “NYC” together.
Some airline websites advertise Birmingham to New York fares that include a connection, so look for “non-stop” in the flight details. If you see a direct flight, confirm the airline, the days and the New York airport before you book.
