Birmingham Airport lost property is handled by Luggage-Point, which runs a desk in Check-in Zone B before security, open from 04:00 to 22:00. You can search its online database, submit an enquiry form or call 0330 223 0893. The line is staffed 9am to 5pm on weekdays. A retrieval fee applies to most items, although prescription drugs and children’s toys are exempt.
Luggage-Point doesn’t handle everything, though. Who you need to contact depends on where you lost the item. This guide explains who to contact in each case, how fees and ID checks work, how long items are kept, and how to get your belongings back if you’ve already left the airport.
Who to contact: a quick guide
| Where you lost it | Who to contact |
|---|---|
| In the terminal, including security, shops, gates and lounges | Luggage-Point lost property |
| On the aircraft cabin | Your airline first, as the item may still be with them |
| Checked bag didn’t arrive at Birmingham | Swissport, or your airline’s baggage handling agent |
| Checked bag didn’t arrive abroad | Your airline or ground agent at the destination airport |
| On a train or bus to the airport | The train or bus operator |
| In a taxi or private hire car | The taxi or transfer company you booked with |
Getting this right at the start saves time. For example, a jacket left in the security tray area goes to Luggage-Point. A suitcase that never appeared on the carousel belongs to a completely separate process.
How Birmingham Airport lost property works
Where the desk is
The Luggage-Point Airport Services desk is in Check-in Zone B, on the landside of the terminal before security. The desk opens at 04:00 and closes at 22:00. Because it sits before security, you can visit without a boarding pass.
How to report a lost item
You have three ways to start a claim:
- Search the database. Luggage-Point logs found items in real time on its online search facility, airport-lostproperty.com. You can filter by airport, date range, keyword and where the item was lost.
- Submit an enquiry form. The form on Luggage-Point’s website asks what you lost, where and when, and for a detailed description. You can also upload up to two photos.
- Phone or email. Call 0330 223 0893 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, or email birmingham@luggage-point.co.uk.
Luggage-Point aims to respond within 72 hours. Include as much detail as possible in your enquiry, such as the colour, brand, case or phone lock-screen image, scratches, stickers or engraving. Small details often decide whether an item can be matched to you.
Items found in the terminal
Staff bring items found anywhere in the terminal to Luggage-Point. That includes items from security, the departure lounge, shops, restaurants and public areas. Luggage-Point also handles items found in aircraft cabins for some airlines. Each item is checked for any contact details that might identify its owner.
What happens if you left something on the plane
The airport’s advice is to contact your airline first, because an item left on board may still be with the airline or its handling agent. You’ll find contact details in the airline directory on Birmingham Airport’s website.
If your airline says the item went to the terminal, then check the Luggage-Point database. Have your flight number, seat number and date to hand. That information helps both the airline and Luggage-Point narrow the search.
Checked luggage that didn’t arrive
A missing suitcase isn’t lost property in the usual sense. The airline is responsible for it, and Luggage-Point can’t help. If your bag doesn’t arrive, delayed or damaged baggage is handled by a different team:
- Swissport: call +44 (0)121 368 3995.
- Jet2 passengers: call +44 (0)121 767 1578 or use the airline’s baggage help pages.
- TUI passengers: use TUI’s luggage delay pages.
- More than five days after arrival: contact your airline directly.
Report a missing bag before you leave the baggage hall if you can, and keep your reference number. Strict deadlines apply to compensation claims. Our guide to lost or delayed baggage compensation explains the time limits and what you can claim.
Birmingham Airport lost property fees
The retrieval fee
Luggage-Point charges a fee to return most items. It covers the cost of logging, checking, storing and tracing each item. Luggage-Point doesn’t publish a fixed fee on its website. Instead, it confirms the price in a written quotation, which stays valid for three days.
What’s free
A few exemptions apply:
- Prescription drugs: no charge.
- Children’s toys: no charge.
- Items collected within 30 minutes of being processed: no charge.
The 30-minute rule is worth knowing. If you realise at the gate or in the check-in hall that something is missing, go to the desk straight away rather than waiting until you get home.
Storage charges
If you can’t collect straight away, Luggage-Point can store your item for up to 42 additional days. The charge is £10 per day, capped at £50 including retrieval costs.
The rules for large items are stricter. Once claimed, a large item must be collected within 14 days. After that, a £10 daily storage fee applies on top of the standard charge.
When you must pay
After a successful claim, you have 72 hours to pay for collection or shipping. If you don’t pay within that window, or don’t collect as agreed, daily storage charges can start. The desk accepts cash in person, as well as all major credit and debit cards, with no card surcharge.
How long does Birmingham Airport keep lost property?
Most items are kept for 90 days from the date Luggage-Point receives them. After three months, unclaimed items may be sold, auctioned, donated to charity, recycled or disposed of. Some items have much shorter deadlines.
| Item | How long it’s held | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Most items | 90 days | Sold, donated, recycled or disposed of |
| Passports | 14 days | Handed to the Airport Police or Border Force |
| Items containing alcohol or tobacco | 30 days | Surrendered to Border Force |
| Cash found in wallets or purses | 7 days | Banked, but can be transferred to you on request |
| Driving licences | Standard period | A letter goes to the address on the licence |
For a lost passport, the 14-day limit matters most. If you’re overseas and can’t get to the desk quickly, contact Luggage-Point immediately. It’s also worth reporting the loss to HM Passport Office, particularly if you have an upcoming trip.
Cash is handled separately. Luggage-Point removes any money from a found wallet, counts it in front of a witness and holds it for seven days. Cash can’t be posted, so you’ll need to collect it in person or request a bank transfer. A bank transfer may involve a deduction for costs.
Luggage-Point won’t accept prohibited or restricted items as lost property. It may also destroy items containing leaking liquids or hazardous substances.
How to get your item back
Collecting it yourself
Take a passport or photo driving licence to the desk, and be ready to describe the item in full. Luggage-Point uses both to confirm the item is yours before releasing it.
Sending someone else
A friend or relative can collect on your behalf. Tell Luggage-Point who they are and when they’ll arrive. Under Luggage-Point’s terms, the collector needs a signed authority form from you, plus your identification. The airport also asks nominated collectors to show their own passport or driving licence, so they should bring that too. Confirm the exact requirements with Luggage-Point before anyone makes the trip.
Having it posted
If collection isn’t practical, Luggage-Point can ship identified items to any address in the UK or abroad. You pay the retrieval charge plus shipping costs. That’s often the sensible option for international travellers who have already flown home.
Returning to the airport to collect your item
If you’re driving back to BHX, remember that stopping outside the terminal isn’t free. Our guide to Birmingham Airport drop-off charges explains your options for a short visit. If you’re flying back in and want to call at the desk on the way out, allow time for the queue.
National Executive Transfers can build that stop into an arrival pickup. Mention it when you book your Birmingham Airport transfer, and your pickup time can allow for it. With meet and greet at Birmingham Airport, your chauffeur monitors your flight and meets you in arrivals, so a delay doesn’t cut into that time.
How to avoid losing things at Birmingham Airport
Most lost property turns up at predictable points in the journey. A few habits help:
- At security: count your trays before you walk away. Laptops, belts, watches and liquids bags are often left behind. Our UK airport security rules guide explains what goes in the trays.
- At the gate: check seat pockets, chargers and phones before you board. Items dropped in a hurry often stay behind.
- On the aircraft: check the seat pocket and overhead locker before you stand up to leave.
- In the car: make a final check of the boot and back seat before your driver leaves.
Labels help too. A name and email address inside a bag, a lock screen showing an alternative contact number, or a tracking tag in your luggage all make it easier to match an item to you.
Lost property at other UK airports
Every airport runs its own system, and procedures differ. If you’re flying from elsewhere, see our guides to Heathrow Airport baggage and lost property and Manchester Airport baggage and lost property. For a wider picture of arriving at BHX, our Birmingham Airport arrival guide covers the terminal from landing to kerbside.
