There are no direct flights from Birmingham to Sylhet, or to Dhaka. The fastest way to reach Sylhet from the Midlands is a non-stop Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London Heathrow or Manchester. It takes around nine and three-quarter hours. Flying from Birmingham with Qatar Airways, Emirates or Turkish Airlines usually means two flights to Sylhet, and total journeys start at about 18 hours.
For most families, then, the real choice is between Heathrow and Manchester. This guide explains how Biman’s flights work and compares the two airports with the connecting routes from Birmingham. It also covers visas, luggage and the journey to the airport, along with winter and holiday travel.
Birmingham to Sylhet flights at a glance
| Option | Airline | Journey | Worth knowing |

| Birmingham, two stops to Sylhet | Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and others | Listings show roughly 18.5 to 30 hours | Longest journey, with more risk of delay |
Schedules change by season, and the timetables listed here run to late October 2026. Check Biman’s winter timetable before you book December or January dates.
Is there a direct flight from Birmingham to Sylhet?
No non-stop flights from Birmingham
Flight comparison sites list no non-stop flights between Birmingham and Sylhet. They also list none between Birmingham and Dhaka. Several websites mention “direct” fares, but those almost always include at least one connection.
What that means for your journey
The simplest option is to travel to Heathrow or Manchester for Biman’s non-stop service. Alternatively, you can fly from Birmingham and connect through a Gulf hub or Istanbul. The extra hours in the air and at airports are the price of a short drive.
Biman flights from Heathrow to Sylhet and Dhaka
The schedule
Biman’s flight BG202 leaves Heathrow in the early evening, typically around 6.20pm on listed days. It lands in Sylhet around 9am the next morning after roughly nine and three-quarter hours. The flight then continues to Dhaka. In January 2026, Biman said it was running five London flights a week: four via Sylhet and one direct from Dhaka. Check that your flight stops at Sylhet, and confirm the days for your dates.
Which terminal?
Timetable listings show Biman at Heathrow Terminal 3. Terminals can change, so check your booking before you travel. Our Heathrow Terminal 3 guide explains check-in and facilities.
Why choose Heathrow?
Timetable listings show more departure days from Heathrow than from Manchester. It also suits families who live in the south of the Midlands, or who want to combine the trip with a stay in London. On the downside, it’s the longest drive of the options in this guide.
Biman flights from Manchester to Sylhet and Dhaka
The schedule
Biman paused its Manchester route in March 2026 and restarted it on 1 July 2026. The route runs from Dhaka via Sylhet to Manchester, and listings show a few flights a week with an evening departure from Manchester. Listings disagree on the exact days, so check Biman’s timetable for your dates.
The outbound flight, listed as BG208, reaches Sylhet around midday the next day after roughly nine and three-quarter hours. Coming back, BG207 leaves Sylhet around lunchtime and lands in Manchester in the evening.
Which terminal?
Timetable listings have shown Biman’s Manchester flights at Terminal 1. Check your booking, as terminals can change. Our Manchester Airport guide for first-time travellers explains how the airport works.
Why choose Manchester?
Manchester is closer to Birmingham than Heathrow, and it often means a shorter drive for families in the north of the Midlands. Fewer weekly flights mean less choice of dates, and Biman has paused the route before, so check that your date is still operating. If a Manchester flight doesn’t suit you, Heathrow gives you more options.
One-stop and two-stop flights from Birmingham
Via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul
Qatar Airways, Emirates and Turkish Airlines all connect Birmingham with Dhaka through Doha, Dubai and Istanbul. Flight comparison sites list several departures a day on these routes. Fares vary by date, and these airlines often appear among the cheapest options.
Getting on to Sylhet
Flying to Sylhet usually adds another flight after Dhaka. Listings for Birmingham to Sylhet show total journeys of around 18.5 to over 30 hours, depending on the connections.
The domestic flight from Dhaka
If you connect through Dhaka, the flight on to Sylhet takes under an hour. Several Bangladeshi airlines, including Biman and US-Bangla, fly the route. Keep the whole journey on one ticket where you can, and leave a generous gap between flights. That way, a late arrival in Dhaka doesn’t leave you stranded.
Check for Middle East disruption
The FCDO warns that escalation in the Middle East has caused airspace closures and delayed or cancelled flights. Your plans can be affected even if your destination isn’t in the region. Before you book a connection through a Gulf hub, check the latest advice and your airline’s updates.
Pros and cons of connecting
Flying from Birmingham saves you a long drive to the airport, which helps older relatives and young children. On the other hand, the journey is far longer than Biman’s non-stop flight, and each connection adds a chance of delay. Book all flights on a single ticket, so the airline looks after you if you miss one.
Heathrow or Manchester for Biman flights?
| Consider | Heathrow | Manchester |
|---|---|---|
| Drive from Birmingham | Around 120 miles | Roughly 85 miles |
| Flight to Sylhet | About 9 hours 45 minutes | About 9 hours 50 minutes |
| Departure | Early evening | Evening |
| Choice of days | More (about five a week, four via Sylhet) | Fewer (a few a week) |
| Best for | Flexible dates, London stays | Shorter drive, fixed dates |
How to decide
Start with the dates you need, because the number of flights is the biggest difference. Then compare the drive. If both airports work, Manchester usually means less time on the road before a long flight.
Getting from Birmingham to Heathrow or Manchester
The route to Heathrow
Most journeys head south on the M42 and M40, then join the M25. In normal traffic, the drive takes around two to two and a half hours, but the M25 near Heathrow is often congested. Our Birmingham to Heathrow chauffeur transfers cover door-to-door journeys, and our guide to how early to arrive at Heathrow gives realistic timings.
The route to Manchester
For Manchester, the drive is mainly along the M6 and takes around an hour and a half to two hours in normal traffic. Our guide to how early to arrive at Manchester Airport explains check-in timings for long-haul flights. For terminal charges, see our Manchester Airport drop-off and pick-up charges guide.
Planning around evening departures
Biman’s UK departures leave in the evening, so many families set off in the late afternoon. That can mean travelling through the end of the rush hour. Allow extra time, especially on Fridays.
If you’d like a fixed price for your journey to the airport, you can get a quote online for the outbound trip, the return or both.
Winter and peak-season travel
Check the winter timetable
The schedules listed in this guide run to late October 2026. Airlines publish new winter timetables from the end of October, and the days and times can change. Before you book December or January flights, check the current Biman timetable.
Book early
School holidays and winter are busy times for flights between the UK and Bangladesh. With only a few non-stop flights a week, seats on popular dates can sell out. Book as early as you can, and compare Heathrow and Manchester side by side.
Rail and road disruption
No trains will run to, from or through Birmingham New Street from 24 to 28 December 2026. If you’re planning to reach an airport by train, you’ll need another plan. Our guide to the Birmingham New Street Christmas closure explains the alternatives.
Visas and documents for Bangladesh
Do you need a visa?
GOV.UK says you need a visa to visit Bangladesh for up to three months. The exception is a “no visa required” (NVR) stamp in your UK passport. You can apply in advance through the Bangladesh High Commission in the UK. Read the full GOV.UK entry requirements for Bangladesh before you book.
Visa on arrival
GOV.UK says some travellers may be able to get a visa on arrival at Dhaka airport. It’s a single-entry visa valid for 15 to 30 days, and officers issue it at their discretion. You’d need a return ticket and proof of funds. GOV.UK names Dhaka airport only, so ask the High Commission whether the service applies if you land in Sylhet. Applying in advance avoids the uncertainty.
Passport and visa validity
To enter Bangladesh, your passport needs at least two blank pages and no damage. For a visa, it must expire at least six months after the date the visa starts. Your visa starts from the date of issue, not the date you travel, so don’t apply too early.
The No Visa Required stamp
GOV.UK says British nationals of Bangladeshi origin may be eligible to apply for an NVR stamp from the High Commission. The stamp is tied to the passport it’s placed in, so you’d need a new one if you renew your passport. Allow time to apply before you travel.
Entry stamp and onward ticket
Make sure you get an entry stamp when you arrive, because officers check it when you leave and you could be fined for overstaying. At the border, you may also need to show a return or onward ticket.
Arrival and departure cards
Bangladesh has introduced online electronic arrival and departure cards for foreign nationals. GOV.UK says you may be required to complete them, so check the latest requirement before you fly.
Returning to the UK
GOV.UK lists this under dual nationals: when returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement.
Health and vaccines
GOV.UK says you need a yellow fever certificate only if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk. A polio vaccine is needed in certain circumstances. The TravelHealthPro Bangladesh guide explains the health advice.
Money and customs
You may need to declare foreign currency or Bangladeshi taka, depending on how much you carry. Bangladesh also has strict rules on goods you can bring in or out, so declare anything that may be prohibited or taxable.
Safety advice and insurance
At the time of writing, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel only to the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It also warns that flash floods and landslides have affected the Sylhet region, with a higher flood risk before the monsoon. Energy and fuel shortages may also disrupt transport in some areas. Check the latest advice before you travel, because travelling against it can affect your travel insurance.
Travelling with children
Documents for children
Children need their own passports and the right visa or NVR stamp. If a child travels with one parent or with relatives, carry a letter of consent and a copy of the birth certificate. Officials may ask for them.
Making a long flight easier
A nine-hour overnight flight is easier if children can sleep. Pack a change of clothes, snacks and any medication in your hand luggage. Our guide to UK hand luggage size and weight rules explains the cabin limits for the journey out.
Luggage on flights to Sylhet
Baggage allowances
Trips to Bangladesh often involve heavy luggage, including gifts for family. Allowances differ between fares and cabins, so check yours on your booking and weigh your bags at home.
Space in the car
Several large suitcases won’t fit in a standard car alongside passengers. For families and groups of up to seven, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class has room for passengers and luggage. Tell us how many cases you’re bringing when you book.
If your bags don’t arrive
Report delayed or damaged luggage at the airline’s baggage desk before you leave the arrivals hall, and keep your reference number. Our guide to lost or delayed baggage compensation explains your rights.
Delays, cancellations and compensation
Flights leaving the UK
UK261 rules cover flights departing from UK airports, whichever airline operates them. That includes Biman’s flights from Heathrow and Manchester.
Flights back to the UK
On flights into the UK, UK261 applies only if the airline is a UK or EU carrier. Biman is a Bangladeshi airline, so check its own policy and your travel insurance for the return leg. Our guide to UK261 flight compensation rules explains what you can claim.
Coming home from Sylhet
