Stansted Airport sits about 35 to 40 miles from Central London by road. You have three good ways to cover that distance: the Stansted Express train, a coach, or a pre-booked private chauffeur. The train is fastest, reaching London Liverpool Street in about 47 minutes. Coaches cost less and operate around the clock. A chauffeur is the only option that takes you from the arrivals hall to your front door.
None of the three wins for everyone. A solo traveller with a cabin bag will usually do better on the train or coach. A family with four suitcases, a group, or anyone landing after midnight may not. This guide compares journey time, cost, luggage, night services and onward travel, so you can choose with confidence.
Remember that your journey does not end at the station or coach stop. Your hotel, office or home might be across London, and that last leg adds time, steps and cost. We cover it below.
Stansted to Central London at a glance
| Option | Journey time | Fare guide (one way, per adult) | When it operates | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stansted Express train | About 47 minutes to Liverpool Street, 36 to Tottenham Hale | Advance from £9.90, walk-up about £21 to £25 | Every 15 minutes, last train from Stansted at 00:30 | Unlimited, you carry it | Speed and fixed timings |
| National Express coach | From 45 minutes to Tottenham Hale, about 50 to Stratford, longer to Victoria | Advertised from £7 booked ahead | Around the clock | One 20 kg suitcase and a soft hand bag, driver loads the hold | Low fares, night arrivals, many London stops |
| Flibco coach | About 50 minutes to Stratford, about 90 to Liverpool Street | From about £7 booked ahead | Every 30 minutes, day and night | One hand bag and one hold suitcase | Low fares, east and north London |
| Private chauffeur | Roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter in normal traffic | Fixed quote before you book | Any hour | Set by the size of the car | Families, groups, heavy bags, business trips |
Fares and timetables change often. “From” fares need early booking and limited seats sell out, so check the live price before you travel.
The train is the fastest option. Coaches usually cost least. A private transfer is the only choice that needs no change at all.
Stansted Express: the fastest way into London
Route, times and stops
The Stansted Express is the direct train between the airport and London. The station sits below the terminal, about two minutes’ walk from the arrivals hall. Lifts, ramps and escalators help you with luggage. Trains leave about every 15 minutes, every day.
Most services reach London Liverpool Street in about 47 minutes. Many call at Tottenham Hale on the way, about 36 minutes from the airport. For Stratford, you change at Tottenham Hale, and the trip takes just under an hour.
The first train from Stansted leaves between 05:28 and 05:55, depending on the day. The last leaves at 00:30. Check the live Stansted Express timetable for your date.
Where the train takes you
The Stansted Express does not stop in the West End. You change at one of three stations.
| Station | Connections | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| London Liverpool Street | Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and Elizabeth lines | The City, Shoreditch, Paddington, Bond Street |
| Tottenham Hale | Victoria line | King’s Cross, Oxford Circus, Victoria |
| Stratford (change at Tottenham Hale) | Jubilee line, Central line, Elizabeth line and DLR | Canary Wharf, the Olympic Park, east London |
Stansted Express fares and tickets
- Advance: from £9.90 one way when you book online. Book up to six months ahead. An Advance ticket is valid on any train on the date you book, so a late flight does not waste it. Availability is limited.
- Walk-up: recent price guides list single fares between about £21 and £25, depending on the ticket type and the date. Check the live fare.
- Two or more people: a Duo ticket costs from about £18.75 per person each way. A group offer for three or four people saves up to 45% off the standard adult fare.
- Children: under-fives travel free. Older children usually pay a reduced fare, so check when you book.
- Contactless: you can tap in and out with a contactless bank card or phone. Oyster cards are not valid to or from Stansted.
If you travel without a valid ticket, you risk a penalty fare of £100 plus the full single fare. It falls by £50 if you pay within 21 days. Do not tap an Oyster card at Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale and assume you are covered. Buy a ticket or use contactless.
You can buy tickets on the Stansted Express website without a booking fee. At the airport, use the ticket machines (open 24 hours), the station ticket office (06:00 to midnight), the arrivals ticket office (06:15 to 23:30) or the sales desk in Baggage Reclaim (07:30 to 22:30).
On board
Trains have free Wi-Fi and plug sockets. The luggage allowance is unlimited, and you can keep bags beside you, under your seat, in overhead racks or in the racks by the doors. Blue-striped carriages have accessible toilets and wheelchair spaces. Stansted Express also offers assisted travel, so ask for help before you travel.
Train pros and cons
The train wins on speed and predictability. Road traffic does not affect it, and it leaves often. It struggles when you carry heavy bags through stations, when your hotel is far from Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale, and when you land after 00:30.
Coach options from Stansted
Finding the coach station
The bus and coach station sits opposite the main terminal entrance, about a two-minute walk away, with step-free access. You will find waiting facilities, a coffee shop, a newsagent and toilets. Services operate 24 hours a day. See the airport’s bus and coach page for the latest list of operators.
National Express
National Express operates three routes into London, according to its Stansted to London page:
- A6: Golders Green, Finchley Road, St John’s Wood, Baker Street and Paddington, up to every 30 minutes.
- A8: Tottenham Hale, King’s Cross St Pancras, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street, Southwark, Waterloo and Victoria, up to every 30 minutes.
- A9: Stratford, Canary Wharf, Bow, Mile End, Whitechapel, Liverpool Street and Bethnal Green, up to every 20 minutes.
Stops vary by direction and time, so check the timetable for your coach. The fastest ride is about 45 minutes, to Tottenham Hale. Stratford takes around 50 minutes. Victoria takes much longer, and timetable sites show 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. Traffic can add more at rush hour.
Fares. National Express advertises fares from £7 one way when you book ahead. A footnote on its page lists a £9.50 lead fare from select stops, including Stratford, Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale. That note dates from May 2026, so check the live price. A £1.50 booking fee applies unless you log in to My Account. Groups of four or more can save 33% on one-way tickets.
Flexibility. A standard ticket lets you board any similar service up to three hours either side of your booked time, subject to availability. That helps if passport control or baggage reclaim takes longer than planned. A £5 Change & Go add-on stretches the window to 12 hours.
On board. Each ticket includes one large suitcase, up to 20 kg, in the hold, plus one soft hand bag. The driver loads the hold. Most coaches have free Wi-Fi, USB sockets, air conditioning and a toilet. You can buy tickets online, at the desks in Baggage Claim and the Arrivals Hall, or from the team at the coach station.
Flibco
Flibco is the airport’s other coach partner. Its coaches leave every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day. Journey times from its site are about 30 minutes to Redbridge, 50 minutes to Stratford and 90 minutes to Liverpool Street. Other stops include Finsbury Park, Wood Green and Enfield.
Fares start from about £7 when you book ahead. Children aged 4 to 13 pay less, from about £5, and infants travel free. Your hold suitcase can weigh up to 25 kg and your hand bag up to 10 kg. Extra bags cost extra. Your booking stays valid for 24 hours, so a late flight does not cost you the ticket.
Coach pros and cons
Coaches win on price, night coverage and drop-off points close to many destinations. They are slower than the train, and road traffic can delay them. Fares booked on the day can be far higher than the “from” price. A 2025 transport blog paid £13.99 for a same-day Flibco single, for example. Book ahead where you can.
Taxi, private hire and chauffeur
Airport taxis and minicabs
The airport’s taxi partners include Street Cars, which has a reservation desk in the international arrivals concourse, and minicabit, which compares quotes from licensed operators. Metered fares change with traffic, so ask for an estimate. Use only licensed taxis or pre-booked cars. Avoid anyone who approaches you in arrivals offering a lift.
Private chauffeur: the door-to-door option
A pre-booked chauffeur is the only choice that removes every step between your plane and your front door. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, takes your bags and walks you to the car. There is no ticket queue, no platform, no Tube change and no heavy lifting up stairs at the other end.
The drive takes about an hour to an hour and a quarter in normal traffic, and longer at rush hour. You sit down once and stand up at your address. After a long-haul flight, a red-eye or a day of meetings, that matters more than a few pounds.
What a chauffeur transfer includes
A professional operator should give you more than a lift. When you book with National Executive Transfers, you get:
- A driver in arrivals. Your chauffeur meets you inside the terminal with a name board, so you never search for a taxi rank or a meeting point.
- Flight tracking. We follow your flight, so an early landing or a delay does not leave you stranded or paying for a missed pickup.
- Waiting time. Our page lists 60 minutes of waiting time on airport pickups, so passport control and baggage reclaim do not become a rush.
- A fixed price. We agree the fare before you travel. Rush-hour traffic and a longer route do not change what you pay.
- Luggage help. Your driver loads and unloads every bag.
- Child seats at no extra charge. Tell us the ages when you book, and we fit the right seat.
- The right car for your group. A Mercedes E-Class suits up to three passengers with three bags. A V-Class takes up to seven passengers with seven bags. An S-Class suits clients and guests who expect a higher level of comfort.
Confirm the waiting time and child seat terms when you book, so your quote matches your trip.
Who gains most from a chauffeur
A chauffeur is not the cheapest option for every traveller, and we say so. It wins clearly in these situations:
- Families with young children. Car seats, pushchairs and tired children are hard on a train and a Tube change. A private car keeps the whole family together.
- Groups of three or more. One fixed price covers the whole car, so the cost per person falls with every extra passenger.
- Heavy luggage. Four suitcases and a Tube staircase make a poor mix. Door-to-door removes the problem.
- Business travellers. You can take calls, review papers or rest on the way, and arrive at your meeting on your own schedule rather than a timetable.
- Late landings. The last Stansted Express leaves at 00:30. A chauffeur is waiting whatever time your flight arrives.
- Passengers with reduced mobility. Fewer steps and no changes mean less strain. Tell us your needs when you book.
- Guests and VIP clients. A well-presented Mercedes and a professional driver make a strong first impression for the people you are hosting.
Chauffeur, train and coach side by side
| What matters | Train | Coach | Chauffeur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changes between airport and destination | Usually one or two | None to the coach stop, then onward travel | None |
| Who carries your bags | You | Driver loads the hold, you carry the rest | Your driver |
| Waits for a delayed flight | No | Flexible tickets only | Yes, with flight tracking |
| Fixed price for the whole group | No, per person | No, per person | Yes, per car |
| Final drop-off | The station | The coach stop | Your address |
| Late-night arrivals | Last train 00:30 | Yes | Yes |
What a private transfer costs
Be clear about the price. Published fares from other operators vary widely. One minicab operator lists about £75 to £90 for a standard saloon from Central London. Another lists around £120 for a private car for up to three people. An executive Mercedes with a chauffeur can cost more, with one published rate of about £170. Treat these as a guide only, because the price depends on your address, vehicle, time of day and booking terms.
Think in cost per person, not per car. As an illustration only, a £120 car shared by three people works out at £40 each, and that figure already includes the last leg to your door. Four Advance train tickets can look cheaper on paper, but add the Tube or taxi at the far end, the bags you carry and the time you spend changing, and the gap narrows.
For one traveller with a cabin bag, the train or coach is far cheaper. For four people sharing a car, for heavy luggage, for a late landing or for a tight meeting, a private transfer often earns its price. Always ask for a fixed quote before you book.
Questions to ask before you book any chauffeur
A smooth transfer starts with the right operator. Ask these questions of any company, including ours:
- Is the company and the driver properly licensed for private hire?
- Is the price fixed, and does it include waiting time, parking and tolls?
- Does the driver track your flight?
- Where exactly does the driver meet you?
- What happens if your flight lands early or late?
- Which vehicle will arrive, and does it fit your passengers and bags?
If any answer is vague, keep looking. We are happy to answer every one of these before you commit.
Which option suits you best?
| Your trip | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, one cabin bag, speed matters | Stansted Express | Fastest, not affected by road traffic |
| Solo or couple on a tight budget | Coach, or an Advance train ticket | Lowest advertised fares |
| Two travellers | Train Duo or coach | Duo fares from about £18.75 each way |
| Family with young children | Train or chauffeur | Under-fives travel free on the train, and a chauffeur avoids Tube changes |
| Group of three to five | Compare a chauffeur quote with the full group fare | One car can match the total cost |
| Group of six or more | Chauffeur in a V-Class | One vehicle, one drop-off |
| Business traveller | Train for the City, chauffeur for tight schedules | Speed or direct travel |
| Landing after 00:30 | Coach or chauffeur | The last Stansted Express leaves at 00:30 |
| Heavy luggage or reduced mobility | Chauffeur, or assisted travel on rail or coach | Fewer steps and changes |
Count the whole journey
A ticket price is only part of the cost. Add up the full trip:
- The fare for every person, each way.
- The Tube or taxi from your arrival station to your hotel.
- The time spent changing, waiting and carrying bags.
- The cost of a missed connection or a late arrival.
Here is one example. Four adults on Advance train tickets pay at least £39.60 one way (4 x £9.90). On walk-up tickets at about £21 to £25 each, they pay roughly £84 to £100. Coach fares start from about £7 each, so £28 for four, and groups of four can save 33% on National Express one-way tickets. None of these totals include the Tube or taxi at the other end. A chauffeur quotes one price for the whole car, door to door. Compare that single figure with your full group total, and the gap often shrinks.
Which route for your destination?
Where you finish matters more than where the train stops. Use this table as a starting point, then check TfL’s journey planner for live times.
| Where you are going | Route from Stansted |
|---|---|
| The City or Shoreditch | Stansted Express to Liverpool Street |
| King’s Cross, Oxford Circus or Victoria | Stansted Express to Tottenham Hale, then the Victoria line |
| Paddington, Bond Street or Tottenham Court Road | Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then the Elizabeth line, or the A6 coach to Paddington |
| Canary Wharf | A9 coach, or the train to Stratford and then the Jubilee line |
| Waterloo or Victoria | A8 coach, or the train and Underground |
| A hotel with several bags | Chauffeur direct to the door, or the coach stop nearest your hotel |
Each change adds time and steps, especially with luggage. Count them before you choose.
Practical tips for arriving at Stansted
After you land
Allow time for passport control and baggage reclaim before you plan your onward connection. Check the airport’s passport control guide if you are unsure. Do not book a fixed coach or train too tightly. A National Express ticket gives you a three-hour window either side, and a Stansted Express Advance ticket works on any train that day.
Finding the train, coach or driver
- Train: follow the signs from arrivals down to the station below the terminal. It takes about two minutes.
- Coach: follow the signs to the coach station opposite the terminal entrance. Reach your bay at least 10 minutes before departure.
- Chauffeur: your driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, if you booked that service.
Luggage at a glance
| Option | Luggage |
|---|---|
| Stansted Express | Unlimited allowance, you carry it |
| National Express | One large suitcase up to 20 kg and one soft hand bag. Extras can be added when you book, and groups can pool allowances on one ticket |
| Flibco | One hand bag up to 10 kg and one hold suitcase up to 25 kg. Extra bags cost more |
| Chauffeur | Depends on the vehicle, so give your passenger and bag numbers when you book |
Check your airline’s own limits too.
Assistance and accessibility
The airport says its bus and coach links are accessible, and help points sit around the airport, including at the coach station. Stansted Express has step-free access and offers assisted travel. If you need help on a train or coach, request it before you travel. For a chauffeur, say so when you book, so the right vehicle and help are ready.
Delays and disruption
If trains are disrupted, coaches are the usual back-up, because they operate independently of the rail network. Check live service updates before you leave. If your flight is late, tell your operator, because a flexible coach ticket or a tracked chauffeur pickup saves you from a missed connection.
Late-night and early-morning arrivals
The last Stansted Express to Liverpool Street leaves at 00:30. In summer 2026, Stansted Express added extra Friday-night trains from 3 July to 25 September, mostly between Stansted and Tottenham Hale. Those ended in September, and the operator may repeat them, so check its late-night trains page before you rely on them.
Coaches from National Express and Flibco operate around the clock, so they are the usual budget answer after midnight. A chauffeur is available at any hour too. Most Underground lines close overnight, so a late arrival at Liverpool Street may leave you without an onward Tube. Check TfL’s service times before you plan that final leg.
Coming from Birmingham to Stansted
Many Midlands travellers reach Stansted before flying on or returning to London. CrossCountry operates direct trains from Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport. Journey planners show about 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes for the direct service. Buy a ticket in advance or at the station. Journey planners also show quicker options via London, but they need changes and a Tube link.
National Express coaches serve the route too, and published timetables show journey times from just under four hours to more than five. By road, Birmingham to Stansted is about 126 miles, and takes around two hours and twenty minutes in normal traffic, according to our booking form.
A private Birmingham to Stansted Airport transfer takes you from your door to the terminal in one journey. Our city to city transfers page explains how long-distance bookings work.
How National Executive Transfers can help
For many solo travellers, the Stansted Express or a coach offers better value, and we say so. A private transfer earns its price when you land with a family and several suitcases, travel as a group to one address, have a meeting soon after you arrive, land late at night, or simply want one calm journey from the arrivals hall to your door.
That is the journey we do best. National Executive Transfers has operated since 2015 from Birmingham Airport. We drive a Mercedes-Benz fleet of E-Class, S-Class and V-Class vehicles, and we hold private hire licences across three West Midlands councils. We also manage crew transport for international airlines, so punctuality and discretion are part of our daily work, not an extra.

How to book
Booking takes a few minutes. Send us your flight number, your drop-off address, your passenger numbers and your bag numbers. We will confirm the right car and a fixed price, and your chauffeur takes care of the rest.
Call 01564 778080 or request a quote online.
We do not promise journey times, because London traffic decides those, and we do not quote a standard price here, because it depends on your address, vehicle and booking details. What we promise is a fixed fare, a driver who is there, and a journey with no changes.
