Birmingham to Toronto direct flights start on Wednesday 23 June 2027, when Air Transat launches a twice-weekly non-stop service from Birmingham Airport to Toronto Pearson. The filed schedule has the flight leaving Birmingham at 08:05, so most passengers will need to be at the terminal around 5am. That makes the journey to BHX the part of the trip to plan first.
This guide covers the days and times, how to work back from the 08:05 departure, Air Transat’s check-in cut-offs, Canada’s entry rule and what to expect when you land at 06:35. It also compares the new route with connecting flights.
Details last checked on 30 October 2026. The times come from Air Transat’s filed schedule, so confirm them in your booking before you plan your transfer.

What Air Transat has announced
The route and the dates
Air Transat will fly between Birmingham and Toronto Pearson twice a week for one summer season. The first flight leaves Birmingham on Wednesday 23 June 2027, and the last leaves on Saturday 23 October 2027. The airline lists the first Toronto departure a day earlier, on Tuesday 22 June, which explains why you’ll see both dates.
The announced plan covers summer 2027 only. Birmingham Airport says around 10,000 passengers travelled indirectly between Birmingham and Toronto in 2025.
Schedule and flight times
A trade site reported the times filed by Air Transat at the end of October. We couldn’t find a second source for them yet, so treat them as provisional. The flights use Air Transat numbers TS225 outbound and TS224 for the return.
| Flight | Days | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| TS225 | Wednesday and Saturday | Birmingham 08:05 | Toronto 11:10 |
| TS224 | Tuesday and Friday | Toronto 18:30 | Birmingham 06:35 (next day) |
Toronto is five hours behind Birmingham in summer. On that basis, the filed times imply about eight hours westbound and seven hours eastbound. The return flight lands on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so the arrival and departure days match.
Onward connections with Porter
Through its partnership with Porter Airlines, Air Transat says passengers can connect in Toronto to Vancouver, Montréal, Calgary and Edmonton. That saves a second transatlantic leg for travellers heading beyond Ontario. Check how your tickets are issued if you want one booking for the whole trip.
Planning your journey to BHX for the 08:05 flight
Work back from the departure time
A flight at 08:05 pushes everything into the early hours. Air Transat’s published check-in times for departures from Europe are counters open three hours before departure, and baggage drop closing 60 minutes before. The boarding gate closes 15 minutes before departure.
| Stage | Time for an 08:05 departure |
|---|---|
| Check-in and bag drop open | 05:05 |
| Our guidance: arrive at the terminal | About 05:05 on a normal day |
| Arrive at the terminal in July, August and December | About 04:35 |
| Check-in and bag drop close | 07:05 |
| Boarding gate closes | 07:50 |
| Flight departs | 08:05 |
Our guide to how early to arrive at Birmingham Airport recommends three hours before a long-haul flight, and three and a half hours in July, August and December. The Toronto season falls partly in those months. BHX also has a morning rush for security between 5am and 8am, so an early arrival is more than a precaution.
Allow for the journey
From Birmingham city centre, the drive to BHX takes 25 to 30 minutes on a clear run, according to our guide. It can take 50 minutes or more in the morning rush. At 4am the roads are usually quiet, but the M42 can still hold surprises, so plan a buffer.
For a 05:00 arrival, a pickup at about 04:15 from the city centre is an illustrative starting point. Add your own journey time if you live in Solihull, Coventry or further out. Our guide to early-morning airport transfers explains how to plan a pickup in the small hours.
Why a pre-booked transfer helps
Driving or parking at 4am isn’t for everyone. A pre-booked transfer fixes the pickup time and the fare in advance, and our service is available 24 hours a day. If a transfer looks like the better fit, our Birmingham Airport transfers page explains how it works.
Check-in, bags and passport control at BHX
BHX has one terminal, so every passenger uses the same check-in area, security lanes and departure lounge. Online check-in with Air Transat is offered between 24 and 2 hours before departure from most airports. If you have a checked bag, you still need to use bag drop before it closes.
Baggage allowances depend on your fare, so check your booking before you pack. After security, you also go through UK passport control, which adds a few minutes on international flights.
Entry rules for Canada from the UK
UK passport holders flying to Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, known as an eTA. It costs CAD 7, which is roughly £4, and it’s valid for up to five years or until your passport expires. Many applicants are approved within minutes, but some take longer, so apply well before you travel.
Apply only on the official Government of Canada website, because third-party sites charge more for the same approval. You don’t need a visa for a typical visit of up to six months. Check the GOV.UK foreign travel advice and select Canada for the latest rules, including anything specific to travelling with children.
Coming home: landing at 06:35
The return flight is scheduled to land at 06:35 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After an overnight flight you still need to clear UK passport control and collect your bags, which takes around an hour, according to our guide. Our airport collections include flight monitoring, so your driver follows the real landing time. Our meet and greet service at Birmingham Airport explains how your driver finds you in arrivals.
If you land on a Wednesday, you’ll likely be driving into the weekday morning peak. Allow extra time for the journey home, and book the return when you book the outward trip.
If you’re visiting from Canada
Canadian citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation to visit, a requirement that began on 25 February 2026. Apply on the official GOV.UK ETA page before you fly. Reports say dual British-Canadian citizens should travel on a British passport or a certificate of entitlement.
Direct or connecting: how the new route compares
Until June 2027, travelling from the Midlands to Toronto means a connection or a drive to another airport. Air Transat already flies to Toronto from London Gatwick and Manchester, according to its network announcement, which gives some readers an alternative. A direct flight from BHX removes the connection and the drive to another airport. We haven’t compared fares, because the route hasn’t started and prices will vary by date and fare type.
| Option | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct from Birmingham | No connection, local airport | Only two flights a week, early departure |
| Connecting flight | May offer more choice of days and times | A longer journey and a possible missed connection |
| Another UK airport | May offer more frequencies | A longer drive to the airport |
