Christmas markets from Birmingham Airport come down to eight Jet2 destinations this winter: Budapest, Cologne, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Krakow, Prague, Tallinn and Vienna. Copenhagen is new for 2026/27. Flights run from November 2026 to January 2027, so the first job is to match your dates to each market’s opening dates.
This guide covers the eight cities and their 2026 market dates, the difference between a Jet2 flight and a Jet2CityBreaks package, and the border rules for UK passport holders. It also explains how to get to BHX, check in with Jet2 and plan your journey home on a busy winter evening.
Details last checked on 3 November 2026. Flight days, market dates and border rules can change, so confirm them with Jet2 and the official market sites before you book.

The eight Christmas market destinations from Birmingham
All eight cities sit in the Schengen area, so the same passport and border rules apply to each. The table shows each city’s main market and its 2026 dates.
| City | Main market | 2026 dates | Currency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt | 13 November to 26 December | Euro |
| Budapest | Vörösmarty Square | 13 November to 31 December | Forint |
| Copenhagen | Tivoli Gardens | 13 November to 3 January | Danish krone |
| Cologne | Cathedral market | 16 November to 23 December | Euro |
| Tallinn | Town Hall Square | 20 November to 6 January | Euro |
| Prague | Old Town Square | 28 November to 6 January | Czech koruna |
| Gdansk | Old Town stalls | About 20 November to 23 December | Polish złoty |
| Krakow | Main Market Square | Late November, closing date to confirm | Polish złoty |
The dates come from recent guides that cite the official market sites, and some guides list Tivoli’s dates a day either side. Cologne’s cathedral market is closed on Sunday 22 November. Tallinn is two hours ahead of the UK, and the other seven cities are one hour ahead.
Prague is about two hours by air from Birmingham. Flight times vary by city, so check the time shown when you book.
Match your flight dates to the market dates
Jet2’s Christmas flights page lists Birmingham flights to Budapest, Krakow and Prague on Monday 9 November. Those routes also run as ordinary city breaks, and Prague’s Old Town Square market doesn’t open until 28 November. A November trip can therefore miss the market entirely.
Copenhagen works differently. Its new Thursday and Sunday flights run from 19 November to 20 December, which sits inside Tivoli’s season. Based on the dates above, 28 November to 23 December is the window when all eight markets should be open, although Krakow’s dates need confirming.
Which city suits your break?
Jet2’s destination pages and recent guides give a useful flavour of each market.
- Vienna: more than 20 markets across palace courtyards and grand squares, with the Christkindlmarkt outside the City Hall as the biggest.
- Prague: Old Town Square hosts the largest market, with a tall tree and traditional wooden stalls.
- Budapest: Vörösmarty Square is the main market, and Jet2 lists a free ice rink at St Stephen’s Basilica.
- Copenhagen: the market sits inside Tivoli Gardens, so it feels closer to a festive amusement park than a town square.
- Tallinn: a medieval Old Town setting, with the Town Hall Square tree lit on 29 November.
- Cologne: cathedral-side markets, with the season ending before Christmas.
- Gdansk: Old Town stalls with food such as pierogi and gingerbread.
- Krakow: the Main Square market sells handcrafted glass baubles and wooden ornaments.
If you’re travelling after Christmas, Prague, Tallinn and Copenhagen run into January. Cologne and Gdansk finish before Christmas, and Vienna closes on 26 December.
Flight only or package with Jet2CityBreaks?
Jet2 sells flights on their own, and Jet2CityBreaks sells packages. According to Jet2, a package includes return flights, a choice of 2 to 5 star central hotels, 22kg of hold luggage and 10kg of hand luggage. Jet2CityBreaks packages are ABTA and ATOL protected.
A flight-only booking suits you if you’ve already chosen a hotel. Jet2’s Christmas markets page says all prices include 10kg of hand luggage. Check your fare to see whether hold luggage is included before you book.
What to check before you book
A few minutes of checking can save a wasted trip. Before you pay, confirm these points:
- The market is open on the dates you’re in the city.
- The flight days suit your plans, because days vary by route.
- Your fare includes the hold luggage you need.
- Your passport meets the 10-year and three-month rules.
- You can reach the Jet2 desk well before it closes.
- Someone, or a booked transfer, will collect you when you land.
Passport and border rules for UK travellers
Your UK passport must have been issued within the 10 years before you enter the Schengen area. It must also be valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave. The issue date catches people out, so check it as well as the expiry date.
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. On your first trip since then, border staff take your fingerprints and a photo instead of stamping your passport. That can add time at the border, especially on busy flights.
ETIAS, the €20 online authorisation, isn’t in operation, and no start date has been announced as of late October 2026. Our guide to EES and ETIAS for UK travellers explains the two systems. Check GOV.UK before you travel, in case that changes.
Getting to BHX for your Christmas market flight
Check-in at Birmingham Airport with Jet2
Jet2’s check-in desks at Birmingham are in Zone A, and Jet2 says they close strictly 40 minutes before departure. Treat that as a hard deadline, not a target. Our guide on how early to arrive at Birmingham Airport suggests two hours before a short-haul flight, with an extra 30 minutes in busy periods.
If your flight leaves before noon, Birmingham Airport lists Jet2’s Twilight Check-in as available from 16:30 to 21:00 every day. You drop your bag in Zone A the evening before, which makes an early flight easier. Check the airport’s page for the current hours.
A sample timeline for a morning flight
The table is an illustration for a 10:00 departure, using the timings above. Your own flight will differ.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Arrive at BHX, two hours before departure |
| 08:10 | Join the Zone A queue if you have a bag to drop |
| 09:20 | Jet2 check-in desks close, 40 minutes before departure |
| 09:40 to 09:45 | Gates typically close, 15 to 20 minutes before departure |
The gap between your arrival and the 09:20 deadline is your buffer for queues and security. If the airport is busy, use it.
Parking, drop-off or chauffeur?
You have three practical options, and the right one depends on how long you’re away and who is travelling.
- Parking: our Birmingham Airport parking guide compares the car parks, and booking ahead usually works out cheaper than turning up.
- Drop-off: Birmingham Airport charges at its closest set-down area and offers a free Drop Off car park for a short period. Our drop-off guide, listed below, covers the details, so confirm current rates on the airport’s page.
- Chauffeur: a pre-booked transfer removes the parking and drop-off decisions altogether.
If you’d rather not leave a car at the airport for several days, our Birmingham Airport transfers page explains how pre-booked, fixed-price transfers work.
The busy days to plan around
Our arrival guide says the busiest times at Birmingham Airport are 5am to 8am and 4pm to 7pm. It also names Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings as the most congested times of the week, and December as one of the busiest months. If your flight leaves on one of those days, add buffer to the journey as well as the terminal time.
Travelling with children or reduced mobility
Our guide suggests adding 20 to 30 minutes to the standard arrival time when you travel with young children. Pushchairs, bags and toilet stops all take longer than you expect. For reduced mobility, contact your airline before you travel and arrange assistance in advance, then tell airport staff when you arrive.
Coming home from your Christmas market break
When you land back at BHX, you still need to clear passport control and collect your bags. Our arrival guide suggests allowing about an hour from landing for international arrivals. If someone is collecting you, share the flight number, so they can follow the arrival time and not guess it.
NET offers flight monitoring and meet and greet on airport bookings, so a driver can adjust if your flight is early or delayed. A Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven passengers, which suits a group returning with shopping. If your return lands on a Friday or Sunday evening, expect the airport and the roads to be busier.
Packing for a Christmas market break
The weather is cold, and you’ll spend most of the day outside. Pack warm layers, gloves and shoes with good grip. Carry a card and a little local currency in case a stall doesn’t take cards.
Check the airline’s and the airport’s liquid rules before you pack bottles of mulled wine or spirits in hand luggage. If you’re bringing alcohol back, check GOV.UK’s allowances before you buy.
Book your transfer to Birmingham Airport
National Executive Transfers provides fixed-price chauffeur transfers across Birmingham and the Midlands, using Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and V-Class vehicles. Tell us your flight number, pickup address, group size and luggage, and we’ll plan the journey to BHX and your pickup when you land. Get a quote and book online.
