MegaCon Live Birmingham at the NEC: Getting There, Early Entry and Travelling with Cosplay and Kids

MegaCon Live Birmingham takes over Halls 3 and 4 at the NEC on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026. Early Entry and Weekend tickets let you in up to two hours before standard entry, which starts at 11am on both days. That means a Saturday arrival around 9am if you want the full benefit, so your travel plan matters more than usual.

This guide covers early entry, parking, drop-off and the train. It also explains how to travel with cosplay props and costumes, and how to plan the day with children.

How early entry works for your journey

Two hours earlier

Early Entry and Weekend tickets open the doors up to two hours before standard entry, according to the organisers. Saturday’s early start is 9am rather than 11am, and Sunday’s is 10am. Early access means fewer queues at the stands and the first pick of the stalls.

Arriving for 9am

For a 9am Saturday entry, plan to reach the NEC well before the doors open. Many visitors with early tickets will arrive together, so car parks and drop-off points fill early. Drivers and passengers in pre-booked cars should aim for an arrival around 8.30am, with a buffer for traffic.

If you have a standard ticket

Standard ticket holders can arrive later, which avoids the earliest rush. Arrive from about 10.30am, and you’ll still have time to queue before 11am. Tell us which ticket you hold when you book, so we can plan the pickup.

Children and tickets

All three paid tickets are valid for one person aged 10 or over, according to the organisers. Children aged 10 and under go free with a paid adult, up to two per adult, and the organisers’ terms apply. Under-12s must have an adult with them.

Getting to MegaCon Live Birmingham by chauffeur

Where you’re dropped off

The NEC says Veezu is its official private hire partner, with points near the main entrances. Other private hire providers drop off and pick up at the Piazza area or the Atrium entrance. Agree one with your driver, and check the NEC’s site plan for the walk to Halls 3 and 4.

Why a pre-booked car suits cosplay

Props, wings, wigs and armour take up space and don’t suit a crowded train. A pre-booked car lets you travel with your costume in the boot and change at the show. Our events chauffeur service page explains how event bookings work.

Fixed rates

You agree your price in advance, so slow roads on a busy morning don’t change what you pay. Ask for a quote that covers both journeys.

Travelling with cosplay props and costumes

What MegaCon Live allows

MegaCon Live’s weapons policy, which applies at any of its events, sets the limits. Most melee props are permitted up to 150cm, or 180cm for a narrow staff or spear. Shields can’t exceed one metre in height or width. Scythes and oversized axes must separate into two parts without tools. Costumes can’t exceed 2.5 metres between any two points, excluding trains and parts that fold.

Realistic prop firearms

The policy says to keep firearm props completely hidden while travelling, however realistic or unrealistic they look. Realistic imitation props need a brightly coloured tip or bright portions. Bystanders can’t tell a prop from the real thing, so pack it in a bag before you leave home.

Space in the car

A Mercedes-Benz V-Class carries up to seven passengers with luggage, so a group of friends can share one car with their costumes. Tell us the length of your longest prop and the size of any wings, so we can choose the right vehicle. Our guide to V-Class luggage capacity explains what fits.

Changing at the show

The organisers say the Cosplay Village has changing rooms, a cosplay FAQ table and crafting demonstrations. If you’re wearing a bulky costume, change at the venue and travel in comfortable clothes. Pack your costume in a bag that keeps it from creasing, and carry a repair kit.

Wristbands and guides

The organisers say your wristband goes on your left wrist, not over your costume, and the team can’t help remove costume parts. Costumes with hard materials or unusual dimensions need at least one person as a guide. Plan for both before you travel.

Travelling with children

Kids Mega Zone

MegaCon Live’s Kids Mega Zone has inflatables and activities for children aged 4 to 10, such as bumper cars, an obstacle course and a party slide. The organisers say some activities suit under-4s, but they can’t guarantee it. Their Kids Go Free offer covers up to two children aged 10 and under per paid adult. Their shop page describes the age range slightly differently, so check the terms before you book.

Seating and ages

Tell us each child’s age when you book, so we can advise on suitable seating for the journey. A V-Class suits a family of five or more with costumes and bags.

Pace the day

Conventions are busy and noisy. Plan a lunch break, pick a quiet spot to regroup, and keep the return journey flexible if younger children tire. Allow a pickup window of 20 to 30 minutes, which gives you time to gather your things.

A busy weekend on the NEC campus

Several events at once

The NEC’s events list shows the World and British Rowing Indoor Championships on both days, and Winter Funland opens on 5 December. Gladiators Live plays bp pulse LIVE on Saturday and Sunday. Each event adds traffic, and several finish at similar times.

The pinch points

MegaCon Live itself closes at 6pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday. Gladiators Live’s evening show starts at 5.30pm, with doors at 4pm, so the arrivals overlap with your pickup. British Rowing says its racing finishes by 7pm at the latest. Plan a pickup window that avoids the worst of the crowd.

Roadworks

The NEC’s travel alert says the northern side of M42 junction 6 at Bickenhill Bridge is closed. National Highways says access to the airport, station and NEC remains open as normal, and diversions are in place.

HS2 rescheduled its weekend M42 closure to 30 October to 2 November, with backup dates of 6 to 9 November, so both fall before the show. We found no M42 closure announced for 5 and 6 December, but plans can change.

Parking, train and flying in

Parking

The NEC offers pre-pay parking for the event, and pre-booking saves £5 on the standard rate, according to the NEC. Rates vary by event, so use the price shown when you book. The car parks use number plate recognition and fill early on busy weekends.

By train

Birmingham International station is next to the NEC campus, with a covered walkway to the halls. West Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast all call there. Check National Rail for your last train home, and allow for crowded platforms.

Flying in

Fans arriving by air can use the free Air-Rail Link from Birmingham Airport to Birmingham International. For a direct car with your bags and props, our Birmingham Airport to the NEC guide covers the route.

Cosplay events and timing

Showcase and Masquerade

MegaCon Live’s non-competitive Cosplay Showcase takes sign-ups on the day at the Cosplay Village. The Cosplay Masquerade is different. The organisers’ schedule closes applications on 1 November and allocates places on 16 November. Pre-check runs from 16 to 22 November, and pre-judge timeslots follow on 30 November.

There are no on-the-day registrations, and entrants must check in by 12pm on their day. Performances must run under 90 seconds. If you’re competing, plan your arrival around that deadline.

Wearing costume in the car

Seatbelts matter more than looks. Sit in a seat with a working belt, and take off anything bulky, such as armour, wings or large headwear, before you travel. Pack those pieces in the boot, and put them on at the Cosplay Village. Let your driver know if any piece can’t be removed.

Cold queues

An early December morning is cold. Wear a coat over your costume while you wait, and keep a spare layer in your bag. Water and a snack help during a long day in a warm hall.

A sample Saturday

This timeline is an illustration for four friends with early tickets. It isn’t a timetable.

  • 7.30am: Pickup, with costumes and props in the boot.
  • 8.30am: Arrive at the NEC drop-off point.
  • 9.00am: Early entry opens.
  • 9.30am: Change at the Cosplay Village.
  • 4.30pm: Pack up and head to the agreed pickup point.
  • 6.15pm: Your driver collects you after the 6pm close.

Adjust the times for your tickets and your costumes.

Groups of friends and cosplay crews

A group of cosplayers can share a car and split the fare. Tell us how many people are travelling, who’s carrying what, and which props are longest. For larger crews, our guide to minibus versus multiple chauffeur cars explains how to compare options.

Corporate and creator guests

Companies and creators sometimes attend with stock or equipment. Our corporate service offers fixed or pre-agreed rates, multiple authorised bookers and consolidated monthly VAT invoicing with journey-level detail. It also includes a dedicated account manager and hourly or full-day hire.

Carrying your purchases

The organisers list artists, comics, trading cards and collectibles, so you may leave with more than you arrived with. Prints and posters crease easily, and boxed collectibles take up space. Tell us what you expect to buy, so we choose a vehicle with room, and keep fragile items in the boot rather than on your lap.

What to bring

Bring your ticket on your phone, a charged battery pack, water and snacks, and a bag for your props. Wear comfortable shoes under your costume, and pack a change of clothes for the journey home.

Meanwhile, keep your driver’s number saved, and agree a meeting point before you go in. Instead of carrying everything round the halls, share the load across your group.

Accessibility

The organisers say visitors who need extra help can ask a team member. They offer an entry line bypass and chairs in busy locations, and trained staff look for Sunflower lanyards and badges. Complimentary Carer Passes are available subject to qualifying criteria, and the visitor needing help must hold a paid ticket. The NEC’s own accessibility page covers parking and wheelchair hire.

Tell us about any mobility needs when you book, so your driver can plan the closest sensible stop.

Staying overnight near the NEC

Travelling from far away, or planning an early entry? An overnight stay makes the 9am start easier. Hotels near the NEC fill up when several events share a weekend, so book early. Give us the hotel address, and we’ll plan the short journey to the hall.

What to tell us when you book

  • Which ticket you hold: Early, Weekend or Standard
  • The pickup address and the time you want to arrive
  • How many people are travelling, and any children’s ages
  • The length of your longest prop and any wings or large costume pieces
  • Your return pickup window, ideally 20 to 30 minutes after you leave
  • A mobile number that stays on during the day

Book your MegaCon Live chauffeur

National Executive Transfers provides fixed-price chauffeur transfers to the NEC, using Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and V-Class vehicles. Tell us your ticket type, group size, props and return plans, and we’ll confirm a fixed price. Get a quote and book online.
