The Ryanair bag drop time at Birmingham Airport changes on Tuesday 10 November 2026. From that date, check-in and bag drop close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, not 40. If you’re checking a bag on a 09:00 flight, you need to reach the desk by 08:00, not 08:20.
This guide explains what changes and who it affects. It also covers where Ryanair passengers check in at BHX, how day-before bag drop helps, and how to plan a journey around the new deadline.
Details last checked on 3 November 2026. Airline rules can change, so confirm the deadline for your flight with Ryanair and the airport before you travel.

What changes on 10 November
The new Ryanair bag drop deadline
Ryanair announced that from 10 November, airport check-in and bag drop will close 60 minutes before scheduled departure. The airline says the change gives passengers more time to get through security and passport queues before boarding starts. It applies at every Ryanair airport.
Older guides and some help pages still show 40 minutes. That was the rule until 9 November, so check the date on anything you read.
Who is affected, and who isn’t
Ryanair says about one in five passengers checks in a bag, and those passengers are the ones affected. The other 80% check in online and go straight through, so the new deadline doesn’t change their journey. Reports say the change doesn’t alter Ryanair’s baggage sizes, weights or allowances.
If you only have cabin bags and have checked in online, you don’t need to visit a desk. You still need to be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure.
What stays the same
Reports of Ryanair’s rules put the online check-in cut-off at two hours before departure. Ryanair has issued digital boarding passes only since 12 November 2025, so you need the myRyanair app and a completed online check-in before you reach the airport. Ryanair’s airport check-in fee is reported at £55 per passenger, per flight, for anyone who hasn’t checked in online, with Flexi Plus customers exempt.
Ryanair bag drop closing times by departure
The table shows the new deadline for common departure times, and the gate deadline that follows it.
| Flight departs | Old bag drop deadline | New bag drop deadline | Be at the gate by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 05:20 | 05:00 | 05:30 |
| 09:00 | 08:20 | 08:00 | 08:30 |
| 12:30 | 11:50 | 11:30 | 12:00 |
| 15:00 | 14:20 | 14:00 | 14:30 |
| 20:00 | 19:20 | 19:00 | 19:30 |
For a 2pm flight, for example, bag drop now closes at 1pm. Treat these as hard deadlines. Ryanair has been reported as strict about enforcing cut-offs, and we can’t promise any exception.
The deadline uses the scheduled departure time
Ryanair’s rule is based on scheduled departure, not the time the flight actually leaves. If your flight is delayed, the bag drop deadline doesn’t move. Check the airport screens and the app, and don’t assume a late departure gives you extra time at the desk.
What the new rule means at Birmingham Airport
Where Ryanair check-in is at BHX
Birmingham Airport splits check-in into lettered zones. Our arrival guide places Ryanair check-in in Zone B, and the airport’s day-before bag drop page lists Zone B for Ryanair’s evening service. Check the terminal screens when you arrive to confirm your desk.
Work back from bag drop, not departure
The most common mistake is to plan around the departure time. For a Ryanair passenger with a hold bag, the key time is now 60 minutes before departure. After you drop the bag, you still need to clear security and reach the gate.
Our guide to how early to arrive at Birmingham Airport suggests two hours before a short-haul flight, which matches Ryanair’s own advice to be at the desk at least two hours before. The guide puts a typical BHX bag drop queue at around 25 minutes and average security at around 22 minutes. Those figures are NET’s, so treat them as a guide, not a guarantee.
Ryanair’s gate deadline is earlier than most
Our arrival guide says gates typically close 15 to 20 minutes before departure. Ryanair is stricter. It tells passengers to be at the gate at least 30 minutes before departure. For a Ryanair flight, use the 30-minute rule.
A worked example: a 09:00 flight
The table is an illustration for a family of four with one hold bag, flying at 09:00 from BHX. Adjust it for your own journey.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 06:00 to 06:15 | Leave central Birmingham, allowing for the morning rush |
| 07:00 | Arrive at BHX, two hours before departure |
| 07:10 | Join the Zone B bag drop queue |
| 08:00 | New bag drop deadline |
| 08:30 | Be at the gate |
| 09:00 | Departure |
Our guide puts the drive from the city centre at 25 to 30 minutes on a clear run and 50 minutes or more in the morning rush. That’s why the sample leaves at about 06:00 to 06:15. Add time if you’re parking and walking to the terminal.
Other airlines have their own deadlines
Don’t assume every airline follows Ryanair. When we last checked Jet2’s Birmingham page, it said its check-in desks close strictly 40 minutes before departure. Our arrival guide says most airlines close bag drop 45 to 60 minutes before. If your group flies on different airlines, work out each deadline separately.
Day-before bag drop for Ryanair at BHX
What the airport offers
Birmingham Airport lists a day-before bag drop for Ryanair, in Zone B, from 17:00 to 21:00 every day. It is for flights departing the following day up to 09:00. You drop your bag the evening before, then go straight to security in the morning.
For an early flight, that removes the bag drop deadline from the morning entirely. It’s the easiest answer to the new rule if you’re flying at 06:00, 07:00 or 08:00. Check the terminal screens on arrival, because the airport says the desk in use can change.
Parking while you drop bags
The airport lists a reduced tariff in Premium Set Down for customers using day-before bag drop. If you booked parking directly with Birmingham Airport, the first 60 minutes are free, and after that it’s £8 per 15 minutes. If you didn’t, it’s £8 for 60 minutes, then £8 per 15 minutes.
To claim the reduced tariff, go to the Customer Service Cabin in Premium Set Down after dropping your bags. Take your luggage receipt or boarding pass, and your vehicle registration. Our drop-off charges guide explains the airport’s other drop-off options.
Online check-in and the Ryanair app
Check in before you leave home
Online check-in is what lets you go straight to bag drop. Complete it before you travel to the airport, and well before the two-hour cut-off. Your digital boarding pass then appears in the myRyanair app and stays available offline.
If you haven’t checked in online, you have to use the desk and pay the airport check-in fee. That desk also closes 60 minutes before departure.
If your phone fails
According to reports of Ryanair’s policy, if you’ve checked in online and your phone dies or the app won’t open, the airline reissues a boarding pass at no cost, provided there’s enough time before departure. That needs time, so don’t leave it to the last minutes before bag drop closes. Charge your phone and keep a power bank in your hand luggage.
Bookings that need verification
Some bookings, including some made through online travel agents, need verification before you can check in. Ryanair advises passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure if they want to do this at the airport. Complete verification online where you can, because the desk closes 60 minutes before departure.
Getting to BHX in time
Plan the pickup around bag drop
If you’re being driven, set the pickup time from the bag drop deadline. Work out when you want to reach the terminal, then add the journey time and a buffer for the M42. If you’re flying on a Friday afternoon, a Sunday evening or in December, our arrival guide says those are the busiest times.
A pre-booked transfer removes the parking and drop-off decisions. If an early start suits you, our early-morning airport transfer guide explains how we plan pickups around fixed times. Tell us your flight time and whether you’re checking a bag, and we’ll agree a pickup that suits the 60-minute deadline.
Parking, drop-off or chauffeur?
For a short trip, the choice depends on cost and convenience. Our comparison of Birmingham Airport parking versus a chauffeur compares the two, so you can work out which suits your trip.
If you’re dropped off, ask your driver to stop as close to the terminal as the airport allows. A 60-minute deadline leaves little room for a long walk with heavy bags.
Families and group travel
Our guide suggests adding 20 to 30 minutes for young children. Pushchairs, bags and toilet stops all take longer than you expect. The Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven passengers and seven bags, so a family or a group can arrive together at the same time. Child seats are available on request when you book.
Coming home to BHX
The new rule only covers departures, but your return flight lands at the same airport. Our arrival guide suggests allowing about an hour from landing for international arrivals to clear passport control and collect bags. If someone is collecting you, share the flight number, so they can follow the arrival time and not guess it.
NET offers flight monitoring and meet and greet on airport bookings, so a driver can adjust if your flight is early or delayed. Agree a pickup point and a time window before you travel.
What if you miss the bag drop deadline?
Speak to Ryanair staff at once. We can’t say what the airline will offer on the day, and the cut-off has been reported as strictly enforced. Don’t count on an exception.
The simplest protection is to arrive earlier than you think you need to. For a flight before 09:00, use the day-before bag drop.
