There is no direct flight from Birmingham to Lagos. Every route from Birmingham Airport needs at least one stop, usually in Amsterdam or Istanbul, and the quickest connections take around nine and a half hours. Non-stop flights to Lagos leave from London instead. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly from Heathrow, and Air Peace flies from Gatwick.
For Christmas 2026, that leaves Midlands travellers with a real choice. You can fly from Birmingham with a connection, or travel to Heathrow or Gatwick for a non-stop flight of around seven hours. This guide compares the options for flights to Lagos from Birmingham. It also explains the visa and health rules, and covers how to get to the airport with family and heavy luggage.
Flights to Lagos from Birmingham at a glance
| Option | Airlines | Journey | Worth knowing |

| Gatwick, non-stop | Air Peace | Around 6.5 to 7.5 hours in the air | Operates from Gatwick rather than Heathrow |

Is there a direct flight from Birmingham to Lagos?
No non-stop flights from Birmingham
At the time of writing, flight comparison sites list no non-stop service between Birmingham and Lagos. Several of them show the same result, so older articles that mention a direct route are out of date. If an airline announces a direct service, it will publish the details on its own website.
What that means for your journey
Because there’s no direct flight, you have two main choices. You can take a one-stop flight from Birmingham Airport, or you can travel to London for a non-stop flight. Which one suits you depends on how much you value a short drive, a shorter flight and a single aircraft.
One-stop flights from Birmingham to Lagos
Via Amsterdam with KLM
KLM has the most connecting options from Birmingham. Flight comparison data lists daily connections via Amsterdam Schiphol. For many Midlands travellers, KLM is therefore the most flexible choice, especially if your dates are fixed.
Via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines
Turkish Airlines also connects Birmingham and Lagos every day through Istanbul. Fares vary by date, and the airline often appears among the cheapest options. Allow enough time for the connection, as Istanbul is a large airport.
Other connections
Lufthansa and SWISS connect through Frankfurt and Zurich, and Qatar Airways and Emirates connect through the Gulf. British Airways also offers connections, for example via London or Dublin. These routes can suit you if the dates or prices work better than KLM’s or Turkish Airlines’.
Pros and cons of connecting
Flying from Birmingham means a short trip to the airport, which helps older relatives and young children. You can also usually check your bags through to Lagos on a single booking. On the other hand, the total journey is longer, and a delay on the first flight can threaten your connection. Keep both flights on one booking, so the airline looks after you if you miss the second.
Heathrow or Gatwick for flights to Lagos from Birmingham
Flying from Heathrow
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly non-stop from Heathrow to Lagos. Listings show a daily service with each airline, with flight times of roughly six and a half to seven hours. British Airways uses Terminal 5, and Virgin Atlantic uses Terminal 3. Our guides to Heathrow Terminal 5 and Heathrow Terminal 3 explain check-in and facilities.
Flying from Gatwick
Air Peace has flown between Gatwick and Lagos since March 2024, and current listings show a daily service. The airline also serves Heathrow, but those flights have been listed from Abuja. If you book Air Peace, check which airport you depart from and whether the flight is non-stop. As with any airline, confirm the current days and times on the Air Peace website.
Which London airport suits you?
Heathrow is closer to Birmingham and has more choice of times. Gatwick is further away, but Air Peace flies there, and its fares can look attractive. Compare the full cost of each option, including the transfer to the airport and any parking.
Comparing your options
| Consider | Birmingham, one stop | Heathrow, non-stop | Gatwick, non-stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journey to the airport | Shortest | Around 120 miles | Roughly 140 to 150 miles |
| Time in the air | Longer, with a connection | Around 6.5 to 7 hours | Around 6.5 to 7.5 hours |
| Choice of airlines | Wide | British Airways, Virgin Atlantic | Air Peace |
| Best for | Short drives and flexible dates | Fewest changes, most flight times | Travellers choosing Air Peace |
Getting from Birmingham to Heathrow or Gatwick
The route to Heathrow
Most journeys head south on the M42 and M40, then join the M25. In normal traffic, the drive takes around two to two and a half hours, but the M25 near Heathrow is often congested. Our Birmingham to Heathrow chauffeur transfers cover door-to-door journeys, and our guide to how early to arrive at Heathrow gives realistic timings.
The route to Gatwick
Gatwick is further away, so allow extra time, especially on the M25. Our guide to how early to leave Birmingham for Gatwick explains the timings, and our Gatwick Airport chauffeur service covers the transfer.
Planning around evening departures
Some Lagos flights leave late in the evening, and others leave in the morning. Work back from the airline’s check-in deadline for a long-haul flight, then add the drive and a buffer for traffic. For an evening flight, many families leave Birmingham in the afternoon.

Flying to Lagos at Christmas 2026
Book early for peak dates
December is one of the busiest times for flights between the UK and Nigeria, as many families travel for Christmas and the festive season. Fares rise, and seats on popular dates sell out. Book as early as you can, and compare Birmingham, Heathrow and Gatwick side by side.
The Birmingham New Street closure
No trains will run to, from or through Birmingham New Street from 24 to 28 December 2026. If you were planning to reach Birmingham Airport or London by train, you’ll need another plan. Our guide to the Birmingham New Street Christmas closure explains the alternatives.
Busy roads and airports
School holidays and the run-up to Christmas mean heavy traffic on the M40 and M25, and busy terminals. Our Heathrow school holiday travel checklist covers what to expect at peak times.
Booking tips for Lagos flights
Keep connections on one ticket
If you connect, book both flights on a single ticket. That way, the airline must rebook you if the first flight arrives late. Separate tickets leave you to cover the cost of a missed connection yourself.
Match names to your passport
The name on your booking must match your passport exactly. Fixing a mistake after you’ve booked can be costly, and some airlines refuse changes close to departure. Check each traveller’s details before you pay.
Compare the whole trip
A cheaper fare from Gatwick can lose its advantage once you add the longer drive, parking or a transfer. Compare the full cost for Birmingham, Heathrow and Gatwick before you decide. Our guides to Heathrow parking vs a chauffeur and Gatwick parking vs a chauffeur show how the costs compare for longer trips.
Think about travel insurance
A trip to Nigeria over the festive season can involve several flights, heavy baggage and a long stay. Check that your travel insurance covers the whole trip, including delays and lost luggage, before you travel.
Visas and documents for Nigeria
You need a visa before you fly
GOV.UK says you must have a visa to enter Nigeria as a visitor, and you can apply and pay online through the Nigeria Immigration Service. Visa on arrival is no longer available. Apply well before you travel, as processing times vary. You can find the current rules on the GOV.UK Nigeria entry requirements page.
Yellow fever certificate
GOV.UK says you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination, and some airlines may ask to see it before boarding. Some travellers are exempt in certain circumstances, so check the exemptions on GOV.UK for everyone in your group. Health advice is to have the vaccine at least 10 days before you travel, so book a travel clinic early. The TravelHealthPro Nigeria guide explains the health requirements.
Passport validity
GOV.UK says your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the day you arrive. You’ll be denied entry if your passport is lost, stolen or invalid, so check your documents well before you book.
Nigerian passport holders
If you hold a Nigerian passport, different entry rules apply from those for British passport holders. Check the Nigerian authorities’ guidance for your situation, and make sure you carry the right documents for each passport.
Landing and departure cards
Nigeria has introduced online landing and departure cards for foreigners, and GOV.UK says you may be asked for them at the airport. Check the Nigeria Immigration Service website for the current forms. Keep digital and printed copies of your visa and certificates with your passport.
Health declaration form
GOV.UK says you must fill in an online Nigeria Health Declaration Form when you enter Nigeria. The form is linked to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In late September 2026, Nigeria’s public health agency changed the rule. It said only travellers from countries with active Ebola transmission may need to complete the form, and that arrivals from other countries are currently exempt. The rules are still changing, so check GOV.UK and the agency’s website just before you fly. Ask your airline what it needs at check-in too.
Safety advice for your destination
GOV.UK advises against all travel to parts of Nigeria. Read the FCDO’s safety advice for the areas you plan to visit before you book.
Luggage on flights to Lagos
Baggage allowances
Trips to Nigeria often involve heavy luggage, including gifts for family. Allowances differ between airlines and fare types, and between Economy and other cabins. Check yours before you pack, and weigh your bags at home.
Space in the car
Several large suitcases won’t fit in a standard car alongside passengers. For families and groups of up to seven, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class has room for passengers and luggage. Tell us how many cases you’re bringing when you book.
If your bags don’t arrive
Report delayed or damaged luggage at the airline’s baggage desk before you leave the arrivals hall, and keep your reference number. Our guide to lost or delayed baggage compensation explains your rights.
Delays, cancellations and compensation
Flights leaving the UK
UK261 rules cover flights departing from UK airports, whichever airline operates them. That includes Air Peace flights from Gatwick, and British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights from Heathrow.
Flights back to the UK
On flights into the UK, UK261 applies only if the airline is a UK or EU carrier. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are UK airlines, so UK261 covers their Lagos to London flights. Air Peace is a Nigerian airline, so check its own policy. Our guide to UK261 flight compensation rules explains what you can claim.
Coming home from Lagos

Travelling with elderly relatives
If someone in your group needs a wheelchair or help in the airport, book special assistance with your airline well before you fly. Tell us when you book if anyone needs extra time or a closer drop-off point.
